Serena Williams vs. Timea Babos: Score and Reaction from 2015 Wimbledon

Rory MarsdenJul 1, 2015

Top seed Serena Williams made it through to the third round of Wimbledon 2015 on Wednesday after dominating Hungary's Timea Babos 6-4, 6-1 on Centre Court.

Babos provided a stern test early on with some excellent play, but world No. 1 Williams was simply too good in the end.

Having won the opener in 35 minutes, the American went up a gear for the second set and powered to victory in under an hour.

BBC Tennis confirmed the result:

Williams came flying out of the blocks, forcing break points in the very first game and moving to 1-0.

That was to be her only break of the first set as Babos played her way into the game, producing some brilliant net play at times.

The prospect of a break back from the 22-year-old never really looked to be in the cards, though, as Williams' power and serve were almost perfect throughout the first set.

The five-time Wimbledon champion was in an intense mood, clearly aware of the quality of her opponent, and although she served out the set for 6-4, she did not look overly happy, per tennis writer Chris Goldsmith:

As the stats from the first set show, Babos proved a worthy challenger, but Williams was somewhere close to her brilliant, intimidating best, per BBC Tennis:

Babos was on the back foot from the off again in the second set as Williams' power returning saw her break in the opening game and go up 1-0.

Holds of serve from both players then saw Williams serving at 2-1, and Babos managed to engineer two break points against the run of play.

She had her opportunity to convert the first before spearing it long, and three consecutive aces from Williams then left Babos stunned as the chance disappeared.

The world No. 93 could not compose herself for her next service game, and she lost it to love to go two breaks and 4-1 down.

As ESPN's Howard Bryant notes, Williams was giving her all, and almost everything she tried came off:

To her credit, Babos continued to fight, going for big returns on Williams' serve, but she had little success.

Williams powered to another break to seal her victory in under an hour, demolishing an opponent who had put in a decent performance.

She moves into the next round to face Britain's Heather Watson, and although the crowd will be behind the local favourite, she surely has no chance with Williams in this form.

She has not won the championship in SW19 since 2012, but based on Wednesday's performance, there is nobody in the draw who can stop her from claiming a sixth title at Wimbledon.
