Robinho to Guangzhou Evergrande: Latest Transfer Details, Reaction and More

Matt JonesJul 16, 2015

Brazil international Robinho has completed his move to Guangzhou Evergrande, the Chinese club confirmed on its official website on July 16, per the Press Association.

The former Real Madrid and Manchester City forward was released by AC Milan at the end of the season after a spell on loan at Santos, per Alex Fisher of Goal.com.

Robinho, who has signed a six-month deal (per FourFourTwo), becomes the latest Brazil international to join Guangzhou, after the club completed a deal for Paulinho in June. Sports journalist Jonas Giaever doesn’t think it’s a positive move for the forward:

Former Brazil manager Luis Felipe Scolari is heading up the project with the Chinese Super League side, which adds some relevance to a deal that seems a little peculiar at first glance.

While Robinho's profile has faded during his time away from the forensic gaze of European football, he did show a couple of moments at the Copa America to suggest he can still contribute at the highest level, per barcastuff:

After floundering at City and in a subsequent move to AC Milan, there was some understanding behind Robinho’s move back to Santos given the emotional ties he has with the club.

But this transfer, while the CSL is making massive strides, appears to hint at a player happy to go through the motions as he approaches the twilight of his career.

At the age of 31, the Brazilian still had time to recapture some of the sparkle that once made him one of the hottest prospects around.

This move, while it may bolster his bank balance, will merely expedite his transition into footballing obscurity.
