WWE SmackDown Spoilers: Complete Results and Analysis for July 2

Erik BeastonJun 30, 2015

Seth Rollins and Bray Wyatt may have gotten the last laugh Monday night on Raw when they were responsible for leaving Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose lying, but the juggernaut and Lunatic Fringe would have payback on their minds Tuesday night as WWE rolled through Hershey, Pennsylvania, for this week's SmackDown tapings.

Ambrose would square off with Bray Wyatt in the first half of this Thursday's double main event, while Reigns would meet Rollins in a match that could conceivably be a pay-per-view headliner.

Elsewhere on the show, WWE Intercontinental champion Ryback battled Mark Henry in the midst of a losing streak, and Brie Bella carried on sister Nikki's vendetta with Naomi.

Venue

Broadcast Team

Results

  • Seth Rollins and J&J Security kicked off the show with a promo celebrating the recent attacks of Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose and Brock Lesnar. Rollins did some more advertising for the Apple Watch before revealing that Kane booked Ambrose vs. Bray Wyatt and Rollins vs. Reigns for the night's two main events. That is, if Reigns shows up. Ambrose chased the heels from the ring with a kendo stick and Rollins ordered the Lunatic Fringe vs. the Eater of Worlds to start immediately.
  • Bray Wyatt pinned Dean Ambrose clean in a fantastic, fast-paced and energetic opener.
  • "King What's Up" R-Truth pinned Adam Rose (with Rosa Mendes).
  • Mark Henry cut a promo about the disrespect shown to him and Big Show by Ryback.
  • WWE Intercontinental champion Ryback defeated Mark Henry with Shellshocked.
  • Brie Bella (with Alicia Fox) defeated Naomi with the X-Factor after Fox tripped up Naomi.
  • WWE Tag Team champions the Prime Time Players defeated The Ascension.
  • Rusev and Summer Rae cut a promo. Summer apologized for "stooping to Lana's level" on Raw, while the Bulgarian Brute responded to Ziggler and Lana going public by vowing to crush Ziggler to pieces, "eat (his) heart and hang his intestines in his backyard to dry."
  • Roman Reigns defeated WWE World Heavyweight champion Seth Rollins via disqualification when J&J Security interfered. After the match, the heels beat Reigns down until Ambrose made the save. Rollins and Jamie Noble escaped through the crowd, then watched as Ambrose unleashed a series of kendo stick shots on Mercury, leaving him in a heap.
  • Reigns and Ambrose stood tall, staring down Rollins and Noble to close out the show.

Analysis

Thursday's show is much more focused than in recent weeks.

Yes, Seth Rollins is facing Brock Lesnar at Battleground, but WWE Creative has not forgotten about his fringe battle with former Shield mates Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns, which is in full effect on this week's broadcast. The interactions are strong, and the show-closing beatdown by the Lunatic Fringe to Joey Mercury had the fans in Hershey erupting in approval.

Rollins watching from afar and realizing he had not only failed to eliminate his former Shield brethren but also may now be down one member of J&J Security was a great way to show the Architect may have bitten off more than he can chew by incurring the wrath of Brock Lesnar, Ambrose and Reigns.

Regardless of whether or not he has the support of The Authority.

Ryback picks up a huge victory over Mark Henry with a truly impressive Shellshocked. Sure, we have seen him execute the move on the World's Strongest Man before, but it was still enough to generate a huge pop for the Big Guy.

Brie Bella and the latest member of Team Bella, Alicia Fox, were greeted with a huge pop upon their arrival for the former's match against Naomi, despite being heels and despite cheating to ensure victory for Bella.

With every match on the show building to rivalries that figure to culminate in matches at the Battleground pay-per-view, outside of R-Truth's victory over Adam Rose, the show is one that maximizes its minutes rather than touting matches for matches' sake.

Tuesday's tapings not only delivered a strong two hours of television, but it also made for a hellishly fun night of live WWE action that watching at home simply does not replicate.
