Wimbledon 2015: Tuesday Schedule and Predictions for London Bracket

Steven CookJun 29, 2015

First-round action at the 2015 Wimbledon Championships will be wrapped up by the end of Tuesday's play, but not before a handful of tournament favorites will be tested in their All England Club openers.

The tournament opened up Monday without much surprise in the form of upsets, as No. 9 Carla Suarez Navarro and No. 19 Tommy Robredo were among two of the seeded names to fall. But upsets could loom throughout the Day 2 slate, which features a number of susceptible matchups.

Here's a look at everything to know for Tuesday at Wimbledon.

No. 2 Roger Federer vs. Damir Dzumhur

When Roger Federer met young Damir Dzumhur just over a month ago at Roland Garros, the storyline revolved around Dzumhur's dream matchup against his childhood idol. Of course, it ended with a predictable straight-sets Federer victory.

Nothing different should be expected with Federer eyeing perhaps his last great chance at Grand Slam title No. 18.

When it comes to career dominance at the All England Club, there's arguably nobody better in the history of tennis. ESPN Stats & Info put it into scope:

Even as Federer begins to slip from the forefront of contention at most major championships, his competence at Wimbledon hasn't wavered. He got to the cusp of that elusive 18th Grand Slam title here last year, when Novak Djokovic barely edged him.

Just like at the French Open when it took eventual champion Stan Wawrinka, it will take a similarly legendary effort to top Federer at his proverbial home court. Dzumhur doesn't have nearly enough to threaten doing that.

Prediction: Federer wins, 6-3, 6-4, 6-1

No. 2 Petra Kvitova vs. Kiki Bertens

Petra Kvitova begins her quest for a Wimbledon title repeat against Netherlands' own Kiki Bertens, a foe who hasn't escaped past the second round in her young career.

If there's any reason to question Kvitova coming into the tournament, it lies in her most recent outing. She pulled out of the Ageon International at Eastbourne due to illness, but she's locked and loaded for Tuesday's match, scouting her opponent properly.

“I know that she's kind of player who she likes [sic] to play aggressive serve, really aggressive game from the baseline," Kvitova said, per Alex Sharp of Wimbledon.com. "That's I think how she going to play [sic]. That's going to be tough to be ready for each point, be ready for the service game and return game. We'll see.”

Kvitova and Bertens have never met in their careers, but that will play to the advantage of the second-ranked player in the world much more so than the 108th. With the chance to open up her tournament in style, Kvitova will take advantage.

Prediction: Kvitova wins, 6-1, 6-2

No. 13 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga vs. Gilles Muller

The draw makers didn't do Jo-Wilfried Tsonga any favors as he looks to build on his strong outing at the French Open. He opens up his tournament against pesky veteran Gilles Muller, who possesses the experience and ability to take the Frenchman down—or at least seriously threaten him.

Tsonga is coming off a strong semifinal outing at Roland Garros, but that shouldn't be a surprise—it marked his second semifinal at the French Open in the last three years. Of course, he's already made the semifinal twice at Wimbledon.

Muller actually has the edge in career head-to-head meetings with Tsonga, leading 2-1 in that department. But he doesn't have the same success on grass as Tsonga's 58-18 record, and the Frenchman has seen plenty of long runs at Wimbledon while Muller has never advanced past Round 3.

With a career of success against Tsonga, Muller should be able to push this one to five sets and put the favorite on the brink of elimination. But that's exactly the type of setting where Tsonga tends to step up his game.

Prediction: Tsonga wins, 6-4, 6-7, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3
