Men's Analysis

Novak Djokovic was tested, Lleyton Hewitt said goodbye and the top seeds in play generally made it through unscathed. It was an eventful day on the men's draw, in other words.

While Djokovic ultimately won 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 against Philipp Kohlschreiber, the victory didn't exactly come easy, hence the Djoker's pretty spirited response after the match.

Djokovic was quick to praise Kohlschreiber as well.

“I had a very tough opponent who can be very tricky on all surfaces, especially grass," Djokovic told Kevin Mitchell of the Guardian. The first set could have gone either way. He broke me back right away.”

But Djokovic—who will be extremely motivated to win this tournament after failing, once again, to win at the French Open despite finally beating Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros—was not to be denied on the day.

Hewitt wasn't so lucky at his final Wimbledon, losing 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 0-6, 9-11 to Jarkko Nieminen. Hewitt, who won this tournament in 2002 and is set to retire after the 2016 Australian Open, reached quite the milestone on the day, however, per Wimbledon on Twitter:

As always, Hewitt gave everything he had, and Andrew Brandt of ESPN praised him for doing so:

The top seeds all advanced, meanwhile, as No. 4 Stan Wawrinka, No. 5 Kei Nishikori, No. 7 Milos Raonic and No. 9 Marin Cilic all moved on. No. 19 Tommy Robredo and No. 28 Pablo Cuevas weren't so lucky, however, bowing out on the tournament's first day.

Tuesday will be a fun day at the tournament, as No. 2 Roger Federer, No. 3 Andy Murray and No. 10 Rafael Nadal, among others, will all be in action.

Women's Analysis

LONDON, ENGLAND - JUNE 29: Serena Williams of the United States reacts in her Ladies’s Singles first round match against Margarita Gasparyan of Russia during day one of the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Cl

The Williams sisters were in action and moved on without much incident on Monday, par for the course for Serena and Venus.

For Serena, it continued her sterling record in the opening round of Grand Slams, per ESPN Stats & Information:

For Venus, meanwhile, it was both a Wimbledon first and a milestone:

It wasn't her first opening-round double bagel, however, per ESPN Stats & Information:

Maria Sharapova continued her perfect opening-round record at the tournament, meanwhile:

The women's game lost a few big names early on, however—which is becoming a trend at recent Grand Slams—as No. 9 Carla Suarez Navarro and No. 24 Flavia Pennetta dropped out of play. No. 6 Lucie Safarova was given quite the scare, meanwhile, needing all three sets and a 7-5 nail-biter in the second set to get past Alison Riske in the opening round.

On Tuesday, No. 3 Simona Halep, No. 5 Caroline Wozniacki, No. 8 Ekaterina Makarova and No. 12 Eugenie Bouchard will all highlight a full day of action.
