Men's Analysis
Novak Djokovic was tested, Lleyton Hewitt said goodbye and the top seeds in play generally made it through unscathed. It was an eventful day on the men's draw, in other words.
While Djokovic ultimately won 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 against Philipp Kohlschreiber, the victory didn't exactly come easy, hence the Djoker's pretty spirited response after the match.
Djokovic was quick to praise Kohlschreiber as well.
“I had a very tough opponent who can be very tricky on all surfaces, especially grass," Djokovic told Kevin Mitchell of the Guardian. The first set could have gone either way. He broke me back right away.”
But Djokovic—who will be extremely motivated to win this tournament after failing, once again, to win at the French Open despite finally beating Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros—was not to be denied on the day.
Hewitt wasn't so lucky at his final Wimbledon, losing 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 0-6, 9-11 to Jarkko Nieminen. Hewitt, who won this tournament in 2002 and is set to retire after the 2016 Australian Open, reached quite the milestone on the day, however, per Wimbledon on Twitter:
As always, Hewitt gave everything he had, and Andrew Brandt of ESPN praised him for doing so:
The top seeds all advanced, meanwhile, as No. 4 Stan Wawrinka, No. 5 Kei Nishikori, No. 7 Milos Raonic and No. 9 Marin Cilic all moved on. No. 19 Tommy Robredo and No. 28 Pablo Cuevas weren't so lucky, however, bowing out on the tournament's first day.
Tuesday will be a fun day at the tournament, as No. 2 Roger Federer, No. 3 Andy Murray and No. 10 Rafael Nadal, among others, will all be in action.
