Phil Jones, Manchester United Agree on New Contract: Latest Details, Reaction

Tom SunderlandJun 29, 2015

Manchester United defender Phil Jones has signed a new four-year contract, the club has confirmed, keeping him at Old Trafford until at least June 2019.

Jones moved to United from Blackburn Rovers in 2011 and was entering the final year of his previous deal, but he says he's "delighted" to be signing new terms, per the Red Devils' official Twitter account:

The Daily Mail's Chris Wheeler previously reported that Jones' new contract will see him earn wages of around £80,000 a week for the next four years.

Jones arrived at the club as a centre-back but continued to play in a variety of positions under manager Louis van Gaal last season, with the tactician praising the 23-year-old's versatility as one of his best attributes:

The emergence of Marcos Rojo led to increased competition in central defence and Jones may find his expectations impeded further if United's interest in Real Madrid's Sergio Ramos, per the Daily Mail's Simon Jones, bears fruit.

In any case, Van Gaal sees use in the defender moving ahead at Old Trafford, and Jones will continue to offer the Red Devils his services in the long term.
