Manchester United Transfer News: Latest Sergio Ramos, Seamus Coleman Rumours

Rob BlanchetteJun 28, 2015

Manchester United are preparing themselves for a bidding war, as Manchester City plan to scupper their efforts to capture Real Madrid's Sergio Ramos.

Darren Lewis of the Mirror says the deposed Premier League champions will battle their local rivals for Ramos' signature after United's initial bids for the defender were rejected by Los Blancos.

The Sunday People's Neil Moxley (h/t the Mirror) reported the Galacticos want £63 million for the coveted World Cup winner and that the Red Devils' offers to date have been "way short of Real's valuation."

However, Pedro Riesco—a close confidant of the player's brother and agent, Rene Ramos—has spoken out about the situation and believes the 29-year-old could leave the club, per Lewis: "With everything that has happened it will be very difficult for Sergio Ramos to stay at Madrid."

City are now said to be ready to exploit Ramos' displeasure and could make a move for the marquee defender in due course. Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has spoken publicly about his desire to add world-class talent to City's squad, saying in his post-season address, per Moxley: "[We want to sign] high-quality players [capable of taking the club] to the next level."

But Setanta Sports football columnist Wayne Barton questioned the Red Devils' move for Ramos in a recent blog for Retro United, stating he believes a new deal might be in the pipeline for the Madrid stalwart:

"

The saga will end with a very public press conference and gushing statements that Ramos intends to spend the rest of his career at Real as the new captain. Still, there’s an element of doubt following the Fabregas saga and the fact that United were able to prise Di Maria to Old Trafford.

"

Ramos is arguably Madrid's most important player and is considered as a leader among his colleagues. He played 32 times at the heart of Los Blancos' defence in all competitions last season, scoring four times, per WhoScored.com.

His possible exit from the Galacticos promises to be one of the dramas of the summer, as United battle to sign the very best players in order to compete for the Premier League title once again.

Everton to Block Coleman Move

Louis van Gaal's right-back pursuit looks set to continue, with the United manager said to be interested in signing Everton's much-lauded defender Seamus Coleman.

Greg O'Keeffe of the Liverpool Echo says the Toffees will "rebuff any interest" in the Republic of Ireland international, spoiling LvG's plans.

Squawka recently highlighted why Coleman is now considered one of the best attacking full backs in the EPL:

Van Gaal has primarily used Antonio Valencia at right-back during his 12 months at Old Trafford, but the winger cannot be seen as a long-term solution at the problem position. Rafael suffered consistent injury problems throughout the last campaign, prompting the manager to assess his options.

Ramos and Coleman would both add an increased intelligence to the United back line. The Spaniard would give United the leadership they have sorely missed since the departures of Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra in 2014, and he has the ruthlessness to push the team forward.

However, with the centre-back approaching his 30th birthday, it is questionable whether United would be willing to meet Madrid's extraordinary valuation, with many other solutions available to the Red Devils at a cheaper cost.
