Steven Matz vs. Reds: Stats, Highlights, Reaction from Mets Prospect's Debut

Adam WellsJun 28, 2015

The New York Mets have been struggling to score runs lately. Rookie pitcher Steven Matz, making his first career start on Sunday against the Cincinnati Reds, took matters into his own hands by driving in four runs on three hits.

Oh, and Matz wasn't bad on the mound either. He allowed only two earned runs on five hits with six strikeouts in 7.2 innings as the Mets won 7-2.

According to ESPN Stats & Info, Matz became the first pitcher in Major League Baseball history with four RBI in his debut:

Here is how Matz's hits on Sunday looked, per MLB.com:

Also from ESPN Stats & Info, Matz became the first Mets pitcher since Dwight Gooden 25 years ago to have four RBI in a game:

The Matz family's reaction at Citi Field following his two-run double in the bottom of the second inning was priceless, per MLB.com's Cut 4:

Matz was one of the top prospects coming into 2015, ranking 54th on MLB.com's Top 100 list, but he has been a pleasant surprise at the plate this season as well. Per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, the left-hander hit .304 in Triple-A before receiving a call to The Show.

Combining Matz's newfound offensive prowess with his highly touted pitching ability gives the Mets a rare dual-threat star, even if it's just for one day. He may not duplicate this performance again, but it's a stellar way to debut in the big leagues.

Now, Matz just has to go out and drive in four runs while pitching seven strong innings every time he steps on the mound. No pressure, kid.
