2015 Wimbledon: Best and Worst Dressed at All England Club

Merlisa Lawrence CorbettJul 5, 2015

After several years of pushing the color restrictions to the limit, players decided to take a more transparent approach to Wimbledon style.

Instead of orange-soled shoes or pink peek-a-boo shorts, most players stuck to the strictly-white guidelines. However, they opted for sheer fabric and cut-outs to make a statement.

So many WTA Tour players wore racerback tops and dresses the style appeared to be mandatory. A few players—Venus Williams, Sloane Stephens and Camilia Giorgi—chose flattering straps as alternatives to the racerback.

Even the men got in on the gauzy fabric fad. Rafael Nadal's Nike kit featured all-over mesh crew. Some men wore shorts so sheer you could see the entire shape of their pockets.

When everyone is wearing white and see-through fabrics, making the best or worst list requires some creativity.

The players who made the best-dressed list, distinguished themselves with outfits that showcased creative design. Those who made the worst-dressed list simply missed the mark by trying too hard, or not enough.

The following are the best and worst dressed at the All England Club.

Best: Sloane Stephens

Wow. Sloane Stephens, who usually goes with the understated tank-top style, shows off a beautiful Under Armour dress with thin straps that fan out in the back. With so many women wearing the racerback, this stood out.

Worst: Bethanie Mattek-Sands

Bethanie Mattek-Sands, a lifetime member of the worst-dressed club, made it halfway to respectability. She had her see-through mesh at the shoulders and a nice cut-out in the back of her top. But the loose-fit shirt with gym shorts and knee-high socks...tragic.

Best: Rafael Nadal

Rafael Nadal checks all the right boxes in this Nike kit. It's trendy, with the all-over mesh top. It's sporty, featuring a single horizontal bar across the chest. The black Nike logos add just the right punch without interfering with the all-white concept. It's simplistic and classy. Switch out Rafa's crew for Roger Federer's polo and you still have a winning look.

Worst: Yulia Putintseva

If Rafa's outfit represents sporty done right, Yulia Putintseva shows us how that simple look can go wrong. Besides looking like she's running around in her underwear, Putintseva takes the anti-formal approach to Wimbledon too far. This "Fruit of the Loom" get-up shouldn't even make it to the practice courts.

Best: Maria Sharapova

Although Maria Sharapova went with the racerback, she makes the best-dressed list because of the elegant pattern in the sheer fabric. Strategically lined in all the right places, the dress strikes a balance between sporty and flirtatious. This dress could work at the beach or even for lunch with the ladies. The best Sharapova dress this year.

Worst: Camila Giorgi

Camila Giorgi crosses the line with this design. Unlike Sharapova's outfit, which hints, this ensemble suggests. There's a difference between wearing an outfit with lingerie-like elements and playing in what looks like lingerie.

Best: Venus Williams

Last year, WTA Tour fans voted Venus Williams' Wimbledon dress best of 2014. Not sure this dress tops that, but it's certainly a winner. This stunning A-line dress with cross-back strapping is simple, yet elegant. The older she gets, the more Williams seems to understand that less is more.

Worst: Caroline Wozniacki

Caroline Wozniacki's dress is the perfect example of more-is-less. The Stella McCartney-designed kit features mesh trim, scalloped bodice, faux wrap and odd placement of a cut-out in front. It's too much.

Best: Novak Djokovic

Of course Novak Djokovic wears this look to all the Grand Slams. Yet the bold dark stripes look dashing on his Wimbledon whites. One of the few men who dared to add some color this year, Djokovic, in finely tailored polo, looked every bit the member of the All England Club.

Worst: Dustin Brown

We get it. It's Dustin Brown, aka Dreddy. He's unconventional, super cool. So of course he's going to dress outside the box. But it's the All England Club. Put on some sleeves, man.
