5 Areas for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to Improve on with Arsenal Next Season

James McNicholasJun 28, 2015

As Arsene Wenger weighs up his transfer options this summer, one factor for consideration will be the development of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The midfielder is clearly a big part of Wenger's plans, and the Gunners boss will be keen to ensure he allows space in the squad for the England man to grow.

There are certainly still areas for improvement. Oxlade-Chamberlain will turn 22 at the outset of the 2015/16 campaign. This is the time for him to start delivering on his potential.

In this piece, we name five aspects of his game where improvement could help take Oxlade-Chamberlain to the next level.

Finishing

1 of 5

Last season, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's 23 Premier League appearances yielded just one goal.

For a player with his undoubted technical ability, that's not good enough. Oxlade-Chamberlain showed with his Champions League goal against Monaco that he can strike the ball superbly, but he needs to improve his composure to become a regular goal threat.

Defensive Contribution

2 of 5

Arsenal's current system requires the wide players to track back and support the full-back.

Alexis Sanchez has set the standard, and thus far Oxlade-Chamberlain has done a good job emulating the Chilean's incredible team ethic.

However, there's still more he could learn in terms of defensive nous. That will be especially important if he is to develop in to a central midfielder.

Fitness

3 of 5

2014/15 was yet another season in which Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain was beset with injury problems.

If he is to fulfil his huge potential, he desperately needs to spend the majority of the campaign fit. Oxlade-Chamberlain will be working closely with fitness guru Shad Forsythe over the course of the summer to ensure he remains competitive throughout 2015/16.

Movement

4 of 5

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's low goal tally isn't merely a question of rushed finishing. He also needs to improve his movement so he can get into goalscoring positions.

This is another area in which he can learn from Alexis Sanchez. The Chilean is an expert at darting in from the flank to create goalscoring chances.

Decision-Making

5 of 5

The England international winger is a creative player blessed with vision and a good range of passing. However, stats service Squawka showed he collected just one Premier League assist in the course of 2014/15.

If Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain wants to be considered for a regular Arsenal place, he needs to offer a more tangible contribution in the final third.
