Manchester United have reportedly tabled an improved offer for Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos, believed to be around the £42.5 million mark.

That’s according to Spanish newspaper AS (h/t the Daily Telegraph), which says a second bid has officially been submitted after United's initial £32 million approach was knocked back.

Ramos has recently emerged as manager Louis van Gaal’s top target this summer, with the Dutchman desperately needing a natural leader to strengthen his shaky defensive line.

Plus, with reports of Ramos being unsettled at the Bernabeu combined with United’s likely sale of David De Gea to the Spanish giants, the green lights are seemingly very much aglow for the transfer.

Still, it seems that the Red Devils’ improved bid will still come up short, as Real Madrid are reportedly holding out for a £50 million offer for the defender.

It appears that Real are simply trying to milk United for every penny. If De Gea heads to the Spanish capital for a cheaper price than United get Ramos for, then the Premier League side have quite simply been robbed blind.

Ramos is a top player, sure, but he’s incredibly error-prone and a liability on the discipline front. It’s safe to say that such a staggering amount of money would be better spent elsewhere.

Despite the rumours, former United star Rio Ferdinand believes that there’s no chance Ramos will be heading to Old Trafford. The recently retired defender believes Ramos is simply using United to secure a new contract at Real, via Ferdinand’s official YouTube channel:

That could prove to be for the best, because as much as the Red Devils need a top centre-back, paying £50 million for one approaching the autumn of his career would be unwise—even the original £32 million offer appears steep.

Real will likely knock back United’s latest bid and continue to make them jump through hoops until Van Gaal either makes a crazy bid or gives up the ghost.

Morgan Schneiderlin

Better news for fans now, as Manchester United have reportedly had a bid accepted by Southampton for midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin, per the Daily Star (via James Whaling of the Mirror).

The report states that an offer of £20 million, rising to £25 million, has been deemed good enough for the Saints to bid farewell to the Frenchman, who’s been one of the hottest properties in the transfer market so far.

It seems that a deal could be announced very soon, as Schneiderlin recently told French radio that talks with an unnamed club are currently taking place, reported by Sky Sports:

“The negotiations are ongoing and should be completed in the coming days. Hopefully before the resumption of [Southampton's pre-season] training next week.”

If Manchester United do go on to land Schneiderlin, journalist Kristian Sturt believes it would signal the end of their interest in Bayern Munich’s Bastian Schweinsteiger:

However, the Daily Telegraph’s Jeremy Wilson says that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, telling Bleacher Report’s Ryan Bailey that Schneiderlin is the better option for the club:

Plus, a fee around the £20 million mark represents a bargain by today’s transfer standards—just look at the Ramos story.

Schneiderlin knows the Premier League, he’s exactly what Van Gaal is looking for, and he’s still improving.

United need a stalwart in the heart of their midfield—someone who will go on to become a legend in the famous red shirt. The Frenchman can be exactly that and more.
