Cary Angeline Commits to USC: How 4-Star TE Fits Trojans' Offense

Tyler DonohueJun 26, 2015

Dynamic Pennsylvania tight end Cary Angeline has decided to continue his football career across the country.

The 4-star prospect announced intentions to play for the USC Trojans on Friday afternoon, turning down nearly 40 other collegiate opportunities:

Angeline, a 6'7", 230-pound playmaker, presents the physical frame and athleticism of a basketball forward, creating matchup issues for opponents. The rising senior at Downington East High School caught 67 passes for 1,051 yards and 10 touchdowns last season.

Rated eighth nationally among 2016 tight ends in 247Sports' composite rankings, Angeline commanded college interest as an underclassman. Miami, Virginia, Boston College and Rutgers each extended offers during his sophomore year.

His list of opportunities rapidly expanded to include Alabama, Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon and Florida. Penn State and Notre Dame were viewed as favorites to land Angeline in 247Sports' Crystal Ball.

USC entered the equation in late February. He journeyed to Los Angeles for a campus visit just five weeks later.

Though he remains a bit on the thin side for college competition, Angeline is a complete package at his position. His height and length make him an ideal security blanket for quarterbacks.

Angeline extends his arms in an attempt to high-point passes and could immediately become a formidable force in the end zone against Pac-12 opponents. He exhibits impressive coordination for an athlete of his size, rumbling downfield with enough horsepower to overmatch linebackers in coverage.

Angeline is assertive enough as a route-runner to gain an edge against more nimble defensive backs. He can shield out defenders with his body or snatch high throws placed beyond any other player's reach.

His soft hands seal the deal, and there's always potential for chunks of yardage after the reception.

Angeline is also a willing blocker who bowls over opponents at the high school level. Collegiate strength training will further equip him to duplicate that success at USC, but it's refreshing to already see Angeline embrace contact without the football in his hands.

Trojans head coach Steve Sarkisian continues to assemble promising pieces for his future offensive attack. Angeline joins fellow 4-star USC pledges at quarterback (Matt Fink) and wide receiver (Josh Imatorbhebhe) and running back (Melquise Stovall).

Tight end became an increased priority in the 2016 cycle when 4-star 2014 signee Bryce Dixon left the program earlier this year. Angeline helps revitalize the depth chart and should compete for playing time as a true freshman.

The Trojans now hold 12 commitments in the 2016 class, rated 11th overall nationally and first among Pac-12 programs.
