NBA Draft Results 2015: Team-by-Team Grades, List of Picks and Analysis

Steven CookJun 26, 2015

The five-hour chaos fest that was the 2015 NBA draft has finally ended, although it took into the early stretches of Friday morning at Brooklyn's Barclays Center to do so. That didn't put much of a damper on a memorable night, however.

Things got started in relatively anticlimactic fashion, as the expected happened when Karl-Anthony Towns went off the board at No. 1 overall to the Minnesota Timberwolves. But the picks that followed had little indication of predictability, with surprising developments littering the opening picks.

Of course, all of that is now distant memory and teams know exactly what type of haul they made it out of Thursday night's carnage with. With that stated, let's look at the results and assess how every team did, before looking at some of the best singular selections from Thursday.

Lottery Steal: SF Justise Winslow (No. 10 Overall to Miami Heat)

Looking back, it's safe to say the Miami Heat are happy with the fact that they missed out on the postseason—considering it landed them with perhaps the greatest steal of the entire draft.

With Duke freshman swingman Justise Winslow slipping out of the top 10 of the draft, the Heat wasted no time in nabbing Winslow as their guy. In doing so, they get a dependable prospect who fits nicely into Miami's future plans—or their plans for right now.

Although front offices are usually motivated by the future in drafts, Winslow can also help Miami achieve its goals in the present, as the Associated Press' Tim Reynolds noted:

Just less than a year ago, South Beach was licking its wounds after the sudden departure of LeBron James, which sent the franchise into a tailspin. But as noted by ESPN's Michael Smith, they seem to have been saved by the draft:

At the very worst, this will be a decent-sized coup. Winslow has long been revered as one of the safe picks of the draft, with a skill set that NBA scouts drool over and a high motor that almost always translates well. Even if he struggles to find his jump shot at the next level, he'll be a serviceable role player.

Of course, that's assuming the worst. And with Winslow set to likely join Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and Goran Dragic on a championship-caliber roster pieced together by one Pat Riley, one can expect much more than the worst-case scenario for Winslow.

Post-Lottery Steal: PG Jerian Grant (No. 19 Overall to New York Knicks)

Perhaps a No. 19 overall pick can't make up for the disdain and disgust felt by many New York Knicks fans regarding their fourth overall pick. But it's no secret that the Knicks took a major step forward with some heady maneuvering post-lottery.

Without another first-round pick, however, the Knicks had to move quickly with Jerian Grant still on the board. They offered prized asset Tim Hardaway Jr. in a three-team trade involving the Hawks and Wizards, giving them the No. 19 overall pick to land Grant.

The Notre Dame point guard put his talents on display all season, but really stepped it up in the NCAA tournament—where he caught the eye of president Phil Jackson, per the team's Twitter:

Needing the right point guard to run the triangle offense, Grant says he can be that guy, per the Associated Press (via CBS New York):

"

“I feel like I get them open looks and make the guys around me better, so we’ll be ready to compete right away,” said Grant, whose father is former NBA forward Harvey Grant. “The triangle has high basketball IQ players, and I think I’m one of those. I pick up on the offense really quickly and help the guys around me.”

"

His versatility could also help the triangle, as Jackson alluded to, per ESPN's Ohm Youngmisuk:

It's no secret that the Knicks didn't have much of anything to build off of in the backcourt. They didn't help themselves there with the selection of Kristaps Porzingis at No. 4 overall, a 7-footer who often needs the ball to work.

If the selection of Grant is what gives them a defined backcourt and a bit more direction, it will have been well worth shipping off Hardaway.

Second-Round Steal: SG J.P. Tokoto (No. 58 Overall to Philadelphia 76ers)

BROOKLYN, NY - JUNE 25: J.P. Tokoto shakes hands with Deputy Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer of the National Basketball Association, Mark Tatum after being selected number fifty eighth overall by the Philadelphia 76ers during the 2015 NBA Draft o

Former North Carolina guard J.P. Tokoto waited nearly as long as an NBA draft hopeful will ever have to wait to hear his name called Thursday night. In fact, it didn't happen until after midnight, when the calendar had already struck Friday.

But with three picks left in the 60 overall selections, Tokoto flew off the board to the Philadelphia 76ers at No. 58 overall. It could have been an ugly ending had that not taken place, per Luke Winn of Sports Illustrated:

There are questions about Tokoto's game and he didn't help himself in some regards by struggling at North Carolina, but his potential has never been in question. And it's potential that makes you wonder exactly how 57 players got selected over him.

His athleticism is off the charts, and he brings a defense-first mentality that Sixers head coach Brett Brown is often enamored with. The 6'6" winger is far from a polished product on offense and has many strides to take, but who on the Philadelphia roster doesn't?

Considering the expectations of most No. 58 overall picks, Tokoto could trump what's expected of him if he puts his head down and goes to work developing his vast potential.
