Carl Soderberg, Avalanche Agree to New Contract: Latest Details and Reaction

Adam WellsJun 26, 2015

One day after being traded to the Colorado Avalanche, Carl Soderberg agreed to a new long-term contract with the team Friday.

According to ESPN The Magazine's Craig Custance, Soderberg got a five-year deal from the Avalanche:

Custance also noted the deal has a full no-trade clause for its first two years and a limited no-trade clause in its final three.

The Avalanche confirmed the deal and general manager Joe Sakic provided his thoughts on the new deal, "We are pleased to have Carl signed to a long-term deal. He is a solid two-way forward who is big and strong on the puck. He is versatile, can play center or wing, and his addition will also benefit our power play.”

The 29-year-old Soderberg played with the Boston Bruins for 161 games since 2013 and was set to become a free agent July 1. His negotiating rights were dealt to the Avs Thursday in exchange for a 2016 sixth-round pick.

ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun wrote before Soderberg was traded and subsequently extended that he figured to be one of the most sought-after players: "In what is otherwise a fairly mediocre UFA July 1 crop, at least by the standards of past years, Soderberg could be one of the top catches. He is a versatile, two-way player whose 44 points (13 goals, 31 assists) tied for third in Boston Bruins scoring this past season."

LeBrun also noted Soderberg's camp was seeking $5 million per season on a new deal, so this new agreement with Colorado comes close to that.

The Avalanche have been inconsistent the last five years, making the playoffs once and finishing over .500 three times, but they are taking steps in the right direction.

Committing to Soderberg, as well as owning the 10th pick in Friday's draft, figures to make this a big day in establishing Colorado's future. He got the deal he wanted and will be a focal point on the Avalanche roster for a long time.
