Arsenal Transfer News: Arturo Vidal Bid Readied, Latest on Petr Cech Medical

Rory MarsdenJun 26, 2015

Arsenal are reportedly readying a summer bid for Juventus midfield star Arturo Vidal, while long-rumoured goalkeeping target Petr Cech is set to undergo his medical ahead of an imminent switch to the Gunners.

Vidal has been a reported target for a variety of top European clubs for some time, but Manchester United and Real Madrid have reportedly dropped out of the running recently, per Chilean newspaper El Mercurio (h/t the Daily Star's James Phillips).

The way has been cleared for Arsenal to make their move, and they are preparing to make a £21.3 million offer for the Chilean, according to the Daily Star's Marc Williams.

Williams added that Juve are apparently willing to sell the 28-year-old while his Chilean team-mate Alexis Sanchez is attempting to persuade Vidal to join him at the Emirates.

Vidal has proven his immense quality since he joined Juventus in 2011, winning four Serie A titles and helping the Old Lady to the Champions League final in 2015.

Bleacher Report's Graham Ruthven believes that, with the right signings, Arsene Wenger's Gunners can challenge for the Premier League title next season:

Vidal would certainly count as the right kind of signing, as he would strengthen an area in which Arsenal have been lacking for some time. A bulldozing central midfielder, the inspiring Chile international is superb defensively while also offering plenty going forward.

While Francis Coquelin performed admirably in the middle of the park for the Gunners in the second half of last season, he alone cannot be relied on to do the job for a whole season.

Depth has so often been an issue for Arsenal, but the addition of Vidal would give them tremendous strength in the centre of midfield.

Vidal's purchase would also make up for missing out on long-term target Morgan Schneiderlin—who is reportedly set for an imminent move to Manchester United, per Mirror Sport via Bleacher Report UK—and at just over £21 million, he would represent decent value for a terrific player:

Another area in which Arsenal have long been lacking is in between the posts, with current options Wojciech Szczesny and David Ospina both consistently unreliable.

However, Wenger looks to be on the verge of solving that particular problem with Chelsea's Cech set to undergo a medical on Friday ahead of a switch to north London, per BBC Sport's David Ornstein:

The 33-year-old's move from Stamford Bridge to Arsenal has long been rumoured, per Jack de Menezes of the Independent. It is seemingly now just days away from being confirmed.

Despite spending most of last season on the bench as No. 2 to Thibaut Courtois, Cech is still a phenomenal goalkeeper with plenty of good years left in his career.

He is a four-time Premier League winner and his terrific abilities as a goalkeeper are paired with huge experience which will, in turn, positively affect the entire Arsenal defence.

If Cech and Vidal are both brought in, the Gunners would possibly be a defender and a striker away from being a truly world-class team, and they may be able to break their 11-year Premier League duck in 2015-16.
