It's Tom Watson that paces the pack after the first round of the 2015 U.S. Senior Open as the 65-year-old shot a four-under 66 on the afternoon.
Watson set a blistering pace with birdies on four of his first seven holes. Two more on the first five holes of the back nine had him at six-under, but a double-bogey on the 16th dropped him back down to his day's final score.
One stroke back of Watson are six golfers at three-under including Lee Janzen, Michael Allen and Woody Austin.
Montgomerie sits tied for eighth at two-under. With that same score going into the 14th hole, he alternated birdies and bogeys until he parred the 18th to end the day right on track. Montgomerie currently is the leader with 1,616 Charles Schwab Cup points. His finest moment of the day came on this par-saving putt on the ninth hole.
Second on that list, Bernhard Langer did not fare as well. Langer, who won the Senior Players Championship this year, shot a one-over and is tied for 42nd going into Friday.
After a birdie on the first hole, bogeys on two, eight and 16 put him at two over until a birdie on the final hole of the day brought him back to one over.
One of the finest putts of the day came from Kohki Idoki on the 12th hole. At the time, it put him at three under, but he dropped to even to finish the day tied at 24th.
One of the five tied at two-under, Scott Dunlap delivered one of the shots of the day on the ninth hole. His fairway shot came within inches of an eagle.
Watson has not won a senior major since winning the Senior PGA Championship in 2011. Round 2 will start on Friday morning at 10 a.m. ET.
