Most Dramatic Sports Moments of the Week

Garrett BakerJun 26, 2015

This week is the final installment of this series, and it also ended up being perhaps the least drama-filled week since the start.

While the previous week brought us the conclusions of the NBA Finals and Stanley Cup Final, this week seemed a bit duller in comparison. But there were still some interesting things to discuss from the past seven days.

Here are the most dramatic moments in sports from the past week.

Cubs Walk off in 10th

1 of 5

The Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers didn't play in the most outwardly exciting game on Tuesday night, but it was certainly riveting for other reasons.

Jason Hammel and Zack Greinke pitched lights-out for their respective teams, but each gave way to the bullpen despite giving up only a few hits and no runs between them.

The game went into extras, and the Cubs got a runner to third in the bottom of the 10th. That's when Chris Denorfia came up and hit a fly ball that got the runner home and sent the Cubs into a frenzied celebration.

USA Takes Down Colombia

2 of 5

The match between the U.S. and Colombia in the round of 16 of the Women's World Cup was given an extra boost in drama thanks to some trash-talking from the Colombians prior to the game.

After a scoreless first half, there was certainly a growing sense of tension and desperation as the American side pushed for a goal. A missed penalty kick by Abby Wambach certainly didn't make things easier.

But despite Colombia doing their best being down a woman after a red card, Alex Morgan found the back of the net on a somewhat lucky strike in the 53rd minute that broke the game open, and they would go on to win by a score of 2-0.

NBA Draft Surprise

3 of 5

The Minnesota Timberwolves surprised no one when they took Karl-Anthony Towns with the first overall pick, but the Los Angeles Lakers made waves with the second selection.

Many expected them to take Duke's Jahlil Okafor, but they instead opted for guard D'Angelo Russell, letting Okafor drop to Philadelphia at third overall.

The Sixers, now stuck with young big men Okafor, Nerlens Noel and Joel Embiid, have some interesting decisions to make in the near future.

To continue the surprises, two foreign players, Kristaps Porzingis of Latvia and Mario Hezonja of Croatia, rounded out the top five.

Max Scherzer Nearly Perfect

4 of 5

Max Scherzer turned in an insanely dominant pitching performance last weekend, striking out 10 batters and staying perfect into the ninth inning.

Scherzer got two outs on the Pittsburgh Pirates in the top of the ninth and was therefore facing off against the 27th batter of the game. He just needed a final out on this batter, and he was so close to getting it.

With a 2-2 count, Scherzer threw one a bit inside that hit Jose Tabata in the elbow. There were some rumblings about Tabata possibly leaning into the pitch, but the perfect game was gone.

Scherzer still ended up getting the next hitter to fly out, getting a no-hitter for his efforts.

Beckham Hits Walk-off Homer

5 of 5

The Texas Rangers and Chicago White Sox traded runs through the first seven innings of their game on June 21, ending up tied at 2-2 after nobody could break it open in the eighth or ninth innings.

Neither team got a runner to home in the 10th inning, either, so it went into the 11th. The White Sox were able to get out of the top of the inning without surrendering a run.

Gordon Beckham, who came into the game as a replacement defensive player, ended up blasting a shot out of the park to give the White Sox a walk-off victory on Father's Day.
