Utley Goes to DL With Ankle Inflammation

Wednesday, June 24

Utley has been mired in an injury-induced slump at the plate during the 2014-15 season, and he was benched for the third time in the last five games in Philadelphia's 11-6 win over the New York Yankees Tuesday night.

Utley's ankle has been a problem for months now. He sprained it back in January during offseason workouts, according to Hardball Talk's Aaron Gleeman, and his season has been marred by inconsistencies as a result.

The 36-year-old Utley is batting a putrid .179 this season with just four home runs and 25 RBI. Prior to his bouts of inactivity, Utley accrued eight total hits in June. To put things in perspective, Utley has managed 39 hits all year compared to 32 strikeouts.

Cesar Hernandez should continue to man the controls at second base in Utley's absence. Hernandez has appeared in each of the Phillies' last five games and went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored in Tuesday's win in the Bronx.
