Everton confirmed on Thursday the signing of Barcelona winger Gerard Deulofeu for a fee of £4.3 million.

Deulofeu had a successful season-long loan spell at the club during the 2013-14 campaign, and he returns to Merseyside to kick-start a career that stalled somewhat on loan at Sevilla last season.

The Spaniard excelled during his first stint at Everton, scoring three goals and providing three assists in 25 Premier League appearances, mainly as a substitute, per WhoScored.com.

Goodison Park manager Roberto Martinez voiced his delight at the signing:

However, his spell at Sevilla last season was less successful as he made fewer appearances (17) despite being more experienced.

As reported by the Liverpool Echo's Greg O'Keeffe ahead of the transfer's confirmation, Deulofeu was keen on a return to Everton, and the club's fans and players will no doubt be delighted to see him back.

Spanish football expert Guillem Balague reports Barca have not completely cut ties with the player, suggesting the Treble winners have included a buy-back clause in the deal:

After a terrific fifth-placed Premier League finish in 2013-14, Martinez's Everton side could only claim 11th last term.

However, the addition of Deulofeu should bring an added directness to their attack in the coming season, while the recent free-transfer signing of Tom Cleverley also looks like decent business.
