Arsenal Transfer News: Latest Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Jack Wilshere Rumours

Matt JonesJun 23, 2015

Borussia Dortmund's Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang is the latest striker to be linked with a move to Arsenal, with various reports suggesting the Gunners are set to table a bid.

According to reports in Bild, cited by Jamie Sanderson of Metro, the Londoners will lodge a £28.7 million offer for the Gabon striker, who bagged 16 Bundesliga goals for BVB in 2014-15, per WhoScored.com. Alex Harris of the Daily Star claims that Arsene Wenger will target Aubameyang after missing out on Jackson Martinez, who looks poised to join Atletico Madrid.

Bleacher Report’s Bundesliga football expert Clark Whitney also reveals there have been links between the player and Arsenal surfacing in Germany, but he doesn’t see the logic behind the Gunners’ apparent pursuit:

While Aubameyang’s versatility has seen him start on the flanks for large parts of his Dortmund career, the best spell he’s had in the black and yellow since moving to the club was at the end of the previous campaign, when he was deployed as an orthodox centre-forward.

Aubameyang's pace would give Arsenal an edge.

As Cristian Nyari of FCB Media noted, the 26-year-old did a fine job filling the void left by Robert Lewandowski’s departure last season:

It’s this area which Wenger would surely envisage the Gabon international playing. While he doesn’t have the hold-up skills to match Olivier Giroud, Aubameyang’s blistering speed and willingness to run in behind defences would give the Gunners an exciting new attacking edge.

Bleacher Report’s Graham Ruthven thinks Arsenal’s centre-forward options could do with some fine-tuning in the window:

But given the major changes that will take place at the Westfalenstadion this summer, with Thomas Tuchel replacing the departing Jurgen Klopp, Bundesliga pundit Jan Aage Fjortoft doesn’t expect Dortmund to sell the striker:

The desire to cling on to the player is likely to only enhance what would already be a sizeable fee and for a player who is a little rough around the edges, a sum that Wenger is unlikely to cough up.

Manchester City Want Jack Wilshere

According to the Sun, Manchester City will renew their interest in Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere if they miss out on Paul Pogba.

The piece claims that City are “desperate” to sign the Juventus star, but with Real Madrid and Barcelona reportedly interested and the Bianconeri demanding a whopping £71 million for the Frenchman, the Etihad outfit’s chances are pretty slim.

According to Marc Williams of the Daily Star, the article goes on to claim that City would be willing to splash £40 million on Wilshere as they bid to increase their home-grown quota of players. But Spanish football expert Sergi Dominguez doesn’t see what the fuss is all about when it comes to the England international:

While that assessment is a little scathing, there’s no denying that spending a figure of £40 million on Wilshere would be something of a gamble. He’s a talented footballer, but his injury record is atrocious and his temperament, as is evident by recent run-ins with the Football Association, is far from admirable.

Earlier in the campaign, Bleacher Report’s James McNicholas weighed up whether or not the Gunners should keep hold of their academy star:

The worrying thing for Wilshere, a boyhood Arsenal fan, is that the team actually thrived without him last season. So if a team like City were to come in with that kind of money, given Wenger’s wealth of central-midfield options, it’s an offer that the Gunners would surely consider.

City would potentially be a brilliant move for the player and there’s no doubt Wilshere, fitness permitting, would be at the heart of a side challenging for major honours. But for a lad who is Arsenal through and through, it’d be galling to give up on his dream of becoming a Gunners icon at this early stage of his career.
