Atlanta Falcons: Full Position Breakdown & Depth Chart Analysis on Special Teams

Scott CarasikJul 13, 2015

One of the Atlanta Falcons' biggest strengths is their underrated special teams unit. They have top-five players at each of the key spots of return specialist, kicker, punter and long snapper. The Falcons have multiple Pro Bowl-caliber players within their special teams units.

Matt Bryant is one of the best kickers in the league. Matt Bosher is an excellent punter who is ascending, and Josh Harris is a highly efficient long snapper. On top of that, the Falcons have arguably the best return specialist of all time on the roster in Devin Hester.

Matt Bryant

1 of 4

Role: Place-Kicker

Matt Bryant is one of the best kickers in the NFL. Inside of 50 yards in 2014, he didn't even miss. He also hit 90 percent of his field goal attempts overall and all of his extra-point attempts. The Falcons will have one of the most solid kickers back in 2015 on the first year of a three-year deal.

His clutch abilities are understated, too. The Falcons have the ability to send Bryant out there late in the game when they are within two points to secure the victory. Bryant has shown throughout his career that he has nerves of steel and is a leader for the Falcons both on and off the field.

Matt Bosher

2 of 4

Role: Punter and Kickoff Specialist

Early in Matt Bosher's career, he had some inconsistencies. Then he starting playing the eighth game of his career and brought his overall average per punt over 45 yards. Bosher has been an expert field-position specialist for the Falcons since 2012 and should continue on the same path in 2015 due to his cannon for a leg.

Bosher will also attack returners the way a linebacker would on special teams. He's just as good of a gunner as he is a punter and kickoff specialist. The Falcons brilliantly re-signed Bosher long-term and should continue to see him lead the Falcons special teams units moving forward.

Josh Harris

3 of 4

Role: Long Snapper

Long snapper is an under-appreciated position. When you have a guy who never has a bad snap, it goes unnoticed because he's just doing his job. Josh Harris is someone who does his job and does it well. The Falcons have a good, consistent snapper in Harris and have no reason to look for a new one any time soon.

Devin Hester

4 of 4

Role: Return Specialist

Devin Hester is arguably the greatest return specialist of all time. His 10,113 yards combined with his 19 return touchdowns make him one of the most productive players to ever return in the NFL. His ability to take one back at any time is unparalleled.

He's shown throughout the years that he can change games based on his return abilities alone. And while Atlanta is trying to get more out of him as a receiver by pairing him with some of the best receivers in the league in Roddy White and Julio Jones, this is where Hester makes his money.
