Terrelle Pryor to Browns: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

Timothy RappJun 22, 2015

Terrelle Pryor wasn't able to make it work as a quarterback in the NFL. But that won't stop him from pursuing his dream to continue playing in the league, as the Cleveland Browns claimed him off waivers Monday to play wide receiver.

The Browns confirmed the move, noting they waived defensive back Landon Feichter to make room on the roster. Pro Football Talk on Twitter first had the report, and Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports verified that the Browns view him as a wideout, not a quarterback.

Garafolo noted Browns offensive coordinator John DeFilippo was Pryor's quarterbacks coach in Oakland before weighing in on the fit with the organization:

Cleveland's move for Pryor came after the Cincinnati Bengals cut him last Thursday during the team's minicamp.

Following the release, Coley Harvey of ESPN.com noted Pryor upset the Bengals by posting images from their minicamp on his social media accounts.

"There's a reason we made the decision [to cut Pryor] that we did," a team source told Harvey. "We did what we felt was best for us.

"If I'm [another team], I have to think hard about signing him or else he might give out valuable information of theirs, too."

After the release, Pryor's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told NFL.com's Ian Rapoport his client wanted to be considered a wide receiver, per Chris Wesseling. The change of heart came a month after Pryor said, "If I can't play quarterback, I can't play football," via Kevin Patra of NFL.com.

Pryor hasn't seen the field since 2013, when he appeared in 11 games for the Oakland Raiders, finishing with 1,798 passing yards, seven passing touchdowns, 11 interceptions, a 57.4 completion percentage, 576 rushing yards and two rushing scores.

He's had stints with the Kansas City Chiefs and Seattle Seahawks since though he didn't make much of a mark with either organization.

Pryor was always athletic for a quarterback and has good size (6'4", 233 lbs) though the adjustment to playing wide receiver in the NFL is a difficult one for players who have spent their entire lives catching passes, let alone for quarterbacks transitioning to the position during their professional careers.

Cleveland clearly thinks Pryor has what it takes to make the switch, however. It will certainly be fascinating to watch how he handles the change.
