Jordan Spieth at US Open 2015: Friday Leaderboard Score and Twitter Reaction
Jordan Spieth announced his ascension to the ranks of golf's elite in no uncertain terms by winning the Masters this year at the age of 21. After two rounds of the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay in University Place, Washington, he's put himself in excellent position to make it two majors in a row.
Spieth shot a three-under 67 on Friday, moving him into a tie atop the leaderboard when he finished for the day, though he's hardly taking anything for granted heading into the weekend.
"With this golf course, I'm going to have to be patient," Spieth said on the Fox Sports 1 broadcast after his round. "I was able to attack Augusta this year. I've got to get my driver going."
You can see the full leaderboard below:
Spieth, who started on the back nine, was on fire almost immediately, as he hit birdies on three of his first six holes. A double bogey on No. 18 looked like it might halt his momentum, however, after this rough shot from the bunker, per golf writer Steve Elling:
It also led to the quote of the day, per Golf Central on Twitter:
In the video replay, you can clearly hear Spieth say of the hole, "It is not a par four," suggesting he wasn't a fan of the hole's layout.
Either way, his frustration didn't last long. Spieth quickly recovered with a birdie on No. 1 to earn back one of the strokes he lost.
From there, Spieth parred five straight holes, leading Jason Sobel of ESPN to note the following:
Spieth bogeyed No. 7, however, which at the time dropped him a stroke behind the leaders. But he recovered once again, finishing with a par on No. 8 and a birdie on No. 9 to go into the clubhouse with a share of the lead.
He also finished the day with a piece of history, per Justin Ray of Golf Channel:
All in all, it was an impressive round for Spieth. He hit 14 of 18 greens in regulation, 1.643 putts per greens in regulation and had a driving accuracy of 71.43 percent, per PGATour.com.
Though Spieth isn't guaranteed to be atop the leaderboard when play opens Saturday, he'll certainly be near the front of the pack, leaving the rest of the field almost assuredly feeling nervous. He's been nothing short of brilliant this year, and save for the 18th hole Friday, he's been one of the few players to have seemingly tamed this course thus far.
Yes, the hole locations are set to change and the course will get tougher. But so far this year, at both Augusta and now Chambers Bay, Spieth has handled every challenge he's faced with aplomb. Betting against him over the weekend wouldn't be a wise idea.
