This 'Frozen'-Themed Youth Softball Team Is the Best Youth Softball Team
Admission: I haven't seen Frozen. I know—I'm a monster.
Somehow, I've yet to sit down and summon the ice cream and popcorn and Sour Patch Kids necessary to properly enjoy what is by all reports a modern Disney classic. But now that I've seen these Frozen-themed youth softball getups, I realize I've truly missed the boat.
A youth softball team in Edmond, Oklahoma, decided to put a twist on its uniforms and model them after Queen Elsa of the Frozen franchise. Named the "Freeze," the team recently gathered for an end-of-season picture, and now the image is blowing up everywhere.
BuzzFeed's Jen Markham anchored a video feature on the team. They are princesses. They are mean-mugging. They will go yard on you.
According to the Oklahoman's Jenni Carlson, Betsy Gregory—mother of the Freeze's catcher, Avery—took the team photograph that's since gone viral. She told Carlson she wanted her child to play softball as a way of learning to try new things.
"You can do anything that you set your mind to," Betsy said. "As a mom, that's what we want our girls to feel the power to do, to step up and try anything."
The team played its season with turquoise shirts and white pants. They also tried adorning their helmets with fake blond hair, but that didn't fly with league rules.
"Apparently in T-ball, fake hair isn't allowed," Betsy said.
I have to support the Freeze's look, because anything that makes kids want to play and appreciate sports is fine in my book. And when you think about it, going full princess for game time isn't that different from other common trends. It's certainly a lot cooler than the football player with four sweatbands on each arm.
Dan is on Twitter. He promises to rectify his grievous Frozen sins.
