Draft Rumors
Kristaps Porzingis In Play At No. 2?
Porzingis' workouts allowed his draft stock to make a late surge. The question now is how high in the first round he may climb. The versatile center, who's showcased terrific athleticism for a 7-footer, should land somewhere in the top six.
Depending on whom the Minnesota Timberwolves select with the first pick, the Latvian may even be an option for the Los Angeles Lakers at No. 2. ESPN Insider Chad Ford provided some insight about the Lakers' line of thinking if Karl-Anthony Towns is gone:
"They were very impressed in the Vegas workout I've heard from multiple sources. I'm just not sure they have the courage to do it. I think they've been zeroing in on Towns (for sure if he's there) and either [Jahlil] Okafor or [D'Angelo] Russell. But Porzingis is worth that pick. In fact, if I was drafting at No. 2, that's who I'd take if Towns was off the board.
"
As always, there's concern that somebody who impresses in workouts might not be able to translate that to game action. But the bottom line is there are few players with his size who move around the court as well as he does.
Los Angeles does need a new building block on the interior. Okafor is still the safer option as a polished offensive weapon capable of making an immediate impact. That said, the potential Porzingis has shown definitely makes him worth considering.
D'Angelo Russell "Loves Philly"
There were plenty of question marks after Russell canceled a workout with the Philadelphia 76ers. He's the most complete guard available in the class and would be an ideal match for a rebuilding franchise looking to upgrade on the perimeter.
It appears the 76ers and their fans have nothing to worry about. Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer reported the reason the point guard gave for backing out of the initial meeting was not a way to get out of the workout and that there's no issue with the city:
"76ers fans were concerned that D'Angelo Russell no longer wanted to play for the team when he canceled a workout Friday because he was "real sick."
They have no reason to be concerned, according to a source close to the former Ohio State guard. "He really loves Philly," the source said.
"
The report noted Russell ended up meeting with team officials and head coach Brett Brown and "killed" the workout. So if the 76ers don't draft him with the third pick, it won't be because of the concerns raised about the initial cancellation.
That said, if the first two picks are centers as expected, it would be a surprise if Philadelphia doesn't grab him. After investing a lot of resources into post players, most notably Joel Embiid and Nerlens Noel, it's time to shift the focus to the backcourt.
Willie Cauley-Stein on New York Knicks' Radar
Cauley-Stein is a tough prospect to forecast. He's going to have value; there's little doubt about that. But the unknown is whether he'll simply be a defensive stopper or if he can develop his offensive game enough to become a two-way threat and significantly bolster his value.
One team trying to make that prediction is the Knicks. Marc Berman of the New York Post reported New York is considering the Kentucky product at No. 4 after a strong workout with the team and passed along the center's comments about possibly playing with Carmelo Anthony.
"I think it would be a great fit," Cauley-Stein said. "I think we could complement each other offensively and defensively."
His status is a perfect example of the uncertainty around this draft. He could land with the Knicks inside the top five or may slide toward the back end of the lottery. There are so many prospects grouped closely together that it's impossible to get a perfect read on how things will play out.
If he did land in New York, his defensive presence would be welcome for a team that finished in the bottom third of the NBA in points allowed per game. It's one of several issues that the franchise must fix before it gets back into title contention.
