Jay Glazer of Fox Sports posted the following on Twitter, per TwitLonger:
"I have never been so proud of a guy I've trained than I am of John Moffitt. Retired two years ago bc he knew he had drug issues, took time to go to rehab, clean up his life, beat his demons and he has taken his life back! Guy inspires us every day. He came to me 3 months ago @unbreakable to train to take his career back. He's become the favorite of every player in our gym. He officially un-retired today. Free agent starting guard. So proud of him to get here.
"
Glazer added:
Moffitt, who retired in November 2013 after noting that he wasn't "happy at all" playing the game, according to Arnie Stapleton of the Associated Press (h/t Pro Football Talk), found himself in legal trouble on several occasions in his post-football life. He was "charged with assault and possession of marijuana, cocaine and ecstasy" in 2014 and also "pleaded guilty to misdemeanor disorderly conduct after being twice accused of urinating in public and once accused of criminal trespass," per Mike Florio of PFT.
Moffitt was also dealing with knee, elbow and shoulder injuries in addition to sleep apnea and "floaters" from numerous hits to the head, via Ken Belson of the New York Times.
"I don't want to risk health for money," Moffitt said at the time, via Belson. "I'm happy, and I don't need the NFL."
With a lot of players in today's game retiring due to the health risks, Matt Miller of Bleacher Report surmised that another player who left the league might follow Moffitt's lead:
It remains to be seen whether a new team signs Moffitt or if his time away from the game—along with his past legal transgressions and drug issues—will make teams wary of signing him. Moffitt was never a star in the league after all, and he never started a full season with either the Seattle Seahawks or Denver Broncos.
On the other hand, Moffitt is just 28 years old and appears to have turned his life around, and teams around the league are always looking for quality offensive line depth. If a team feels comfortable with Moffitt's past and believes his future is bright, he'll find himself on an NFL roster come training camp and at least have a chance to make a team.
