"We don't know how he did it," said trainer Rae Guest, as reported by BBC Sport. "It is a shame for everyone involved as he had been working really well."

The American colt was billed to appear in Wednesday's aforementioned race alongside the much-fancied Free Eagle. California Chrome won two-thirds of last year's U.S. Triple Crown, taking the plaudits in both the Preakness Stakes and the Kentucky Derby.

Concern over the four-year-old's fitness first arrived on Monday, when he was noted as "doubtful" to appear by Greg Wood of the Guardian. It's worth noting medication isn't allowed to be administered within 48 hours of the race.

California Chrome has earned owners Perry Martin and Steve Coburn over £4 million to date, per BBC Sport, and he was destined to be a huge draw at the Berkshire-based event.

However, English audiences will no longer have the opportunity to see this exciting horse compete in the flesh.
