Gennady Golovkin Says He'd 'Crush' Floyd Mayweather

Matt JonesJun 16, 2015

Gennady Golovkin has spoken about a potential bout with Floyd Mayweather, claiming he would have no problem facing and beating the undefeated American.

The Kazakh sensation, who has won his last 20 fights by knockout, admitted in an interview on TMZ Hollywood Sports (via TMZSports.com) that a clash with Money would be a “dream fight,” but he made it clear there would only be one outcome should the two ever step foot in the ring:

Money's camp wasted little time in responding to Golovkin's comments, via TMZSports.com:

"

Everyone in boxing wants to fight Floyd. It's the biggest payday they could possibly have.  [Golovkin] has never fought a top opponent in his whole career ... we're surprised you guys would even have him on your show to be honest.

"

On June 18, Mayweather added more thoughts on Golovkin's fighting style in an interview with Fight Hype:

Any bout is a long way off yet, especially given Golovkin has typically fought in higher weight classes to Mayweather. But Triple G discusses a potential fight at a 153-pound limit, and the American, who extended his immaculate professional record to 48 wins from 48 fights with a win against Manny Pacquiao last month, has fought at 154 before.

Mayweather has been insistent that he will hang up the gloves after fulfilling the final date in his contract with Showtime in September, per Sports Illustrated. At this juncture, that final opponent looks unlikely to be Golovkin; although the Kazakh has a burgeoning reputation, he doesn’t quite command the requisite gravitas stateside yet.

Money would be keen to avoid him, too, you suspect. Here’s a reminder of why:

If Mayweather is intent on retiring after one more fight, getting in the ring with a dangerous opponent like Golovkin might not be the best idea if he’s keen on preserving that revered unbeaten record. It’d be a fantastic matchup and an intriguing clash of styles. But at this juncture, it’s a fantastical proposition.
