Gerry Weber Open 2015: Monday Tennis Scores, Results and Updated Draw Schedule

Gianni VerschuerenJun 15, 2015

Roger Federer needed three sets and two tiebreaks to get past Philipp Kohlschreiber in the first round of the 2015 Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany, as his start to the grass season was anything but routine.

Kohlschreiber gave the Swiss star all he could handle and came within two points of a massive upset, but Federer recovered just in time to win the match and qualify for the next round.

Here are Monday's full results:

Roger Federer defeats Philipp Kohlschreiber

Kohlschreiber and Federer gave the crowd at the Gerry Weber Arena a fantastic show in Monday's marquee match, and the latter eventually emerged as the winner in three sets, winning 7-6 (8), 3-6, 7-6 (5).

The win keeps Federer in the running for an incredible eighth Gerry Weber Open title.

Kohlschreiber gave Federer a tough challenge in the first set, forcing the Swiss veteran to move far more than he would have liked on the slippery grass in Halle. Federer suffered two slips in the match, but per tennis reporter Jake Davies, he somehow managed to play a shot from this position:

His German opponent knew the Halle grass very well and has built his game around power over technique, confusing Federer at times in the first set and ultimately forcing a tiebreak.

Both players had several set points, but Federer managed to pull through to grab the set, according to the New York Times' Ben Rothenberg:

Kohlschreiber's return game started to click in the second set, and just as it seemed the 31-year-old would take the upper hand in the match, Federer started getting frustrated with the umpire.

One particular sequence stood out, as the veteran continued to mouth at the umpire over a very late challenge from his opponent, per Rothenberg:

Federer ran out to an early lead in the third set, but once again, Kohlschreiber fought back. The German saved two match balls to force another tiebreak and took an early lead by breaking serve.

With his back against the wall, Federer battled back to win his third match point, and this time, he finished the job. Per Nick McCarvel of USA Today, it was a narrow escape for the tournament favourite:

Before the match, Federer spoke of the importance of the grass season and how focused he is on adding another Wimbledon title to his resume, per Live Tennis:

His start to the grass season was far from perfect, but with Kohlschreiber, he was hardly given an easy draw. Perhaps the early challenge will help him in the long run, reminding Federer that even though he's the king of grass, the gap with the rest of the field may not be as big as he thinks.

Borna Coric defeats Donald Young

Donald Young didn't make things easy for 18-year-old super talent Borna Coric, as the latter needed three sets to dispatch the American.

Coric was kind enough to inform us of the set scores via his personal Twitter account:

The Croat, who has little experience on grass, did well to counter Young's powerful serve, and the match was filled with break chances for both. Coric had the upper hand in the rallies and showed remarkable poise from the baseline, positioning himself well to hit winners with his powerful forehand.

Rothenberg thinks the youngster has adapted to the faster grass surface quite well:

Coric lacks the power in his serve to be a truly dominant performer on grass, but he still has plenty of time to develop. It's unlikely he'll make a deep run at Wimbledon or indeed in this tournament, but Halle represents a wonderful learning experience for the teenager.

For Young, the fact that he was able to hang with the supremely talented Coric has to be considered a success. He came close to an upset and will be disappointed he couldn't advance to the next round, but he leaves the Gerry Weber Open with his head held high.

Kei Nishikori, Gael Monfils and Tomas Berdych headline Tuesday's slate of matches.
