Patrick Sharp opened the scoring for the Blackhawks after a huge blunder by Tampa Bay starting goaltender Ben Bishop, who was back between the pipes after missing Game 4 and being a game-time decision Saturday with an undisclosed injury.
Bishop, coming way out of his net, collided with defenseman Victor Hedman in the faceoff circle, leaving Sharp with a wide-open net and the easiest goal you'll ever see.
The Lightning came out buzzing in the second period and seized the advantage.
Valtteri Filppula snapped one past Crawford midway through the second to tie the game, but it would prove to be the only marker of the night for Tampa Bay.
Vermette's game-winner was set up by Kris Versteeg on the rush.
Bishop made the initial save but kicked out a juicy rebound to Vermette, who buried it.
Tampa Bay will need to pull one out on the road to force a Game 7 at home, but it might be without one of its star players.
Nikita Kucherov missed out on a prime-time scoring chance in the first period and collided awkwardly with the goal post.
He didn't return, and there is no word yet on any potential injury or timeframe for his return.
