4 Players Manchester United Should Clear out in 2015 Summer Transfer Window

Paul AnsorgeJun 12, 2015

While the attention of Manchester United's fans is turned toward potential new arrivals this summer, it is important to remember that some players will also be leaving.

Speaking with MUTV (h/t Sky Sports) Louis van Gaal has warned his squad that some of them could be in for a "rough summer."

Let's take a look at four players who are candidates for a move away from United.

Nani

1 of 4

Nani was given a new contract in September 2013, during David Moyes' time in charge of United. However, the Portuguese winger made just seven starts under Moyes and was, of course, loaned to Sporting by Louis van Gaal.

If United can find a buyer, they should not hesitate to get Nani's wages off their books.

Nani enthusiasts will hark back to the days of the 2010/11 season—his great United purple patch—wherein he managed nine goals and 14 assists in the league. However, even when his numbers were consistent—which they have long since ceased to be—his decision-making could be infuriating.

Given Angel Di Maria has been unable to nail down a regular place in Van Gaal's starting XI, there cannot be much hope of Nani doing so. His unreliable style is a poor fit for the Dutchman's possession-oriented game.

Javier Hernandez

2 of 4

On Monday, Javier Hernandez said, "What I want is to go to a team where I can play and can get minutes," as noted by Darren Lewis of the Daily Mirror

Hernandez is understandably frustrated with his entrenched status as a super-sub. A season as back-up to Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie or whomever United bring in to lead the line does not seem to be of interest to the Mexican.

However, Hernandez is unproven as the main man and United can ill-afford to gamble on him now. Thus, it is time for the much-loved Little Pea to move on and find somewhere he can be an automatic first choice. He would have been a superb back-up option to keep around, but it does not seem that he will be happy with that, and unhappy squad players are the last thing Van Gaal needs on his books.

Jonny Evans

3 of 4

It is always a shame to call for the departure of a player who has come through United's ranks. Jonny Evans, however, should join Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck in leaving the club that raised him.

After the season they have just had, it is hard to argue against the idea that United need to bring in an established leader at centre-half.

If they do, then one of Evans, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo should be moved on. With Jones and Smalling apparently ahead of Evans in the pecking order, and with Rojo's flexibility, it is Evans who will—and should—be sacrificed. He has not built on his early promise and has put in two seasons worth of underwhelming performances.

Add his injury record into the mix and Evans' future at United has to be in doubt. There will be sadness if he leaves, because of his United roots. However, there will not be that much sadness on the basis of his recent on-field contribution.

Robin van Persie

4 of 4

Ah, Robin. We'll always have 2012/13.

It might not be quite as romantic as Rick saying "We'll always have Paris," to Ilsa in Casablanca, but nonetheless, if Van Persie does leave the club, he will always be fondly remembered for his electrifying contribution to Sir Alex Ferguson's final season in charge.

However, that is starting to seem like a long time ago. His electrifying contributions since have been occasional rather than regular. Whether through age, injury, lack of confidence or some reason hidden behind the scenes, Van Persie has only shown fleeting glimpses of the best of himself since Sir Alex left the club.

Received wisdom suggested that with Moyes gone and Van Gaal at the reins, we would see a revitalised Van Persie tearing up the Old Trafford turf. That has not been the case, and it is starting to look like the decline may be irreversible.

Assuming United can bring in a top-quality striker, Van Persie should be moved on to a less demanding league.
