Matt Flynn Signed to 1-Year Deal by New England Patriots

The Patriots have reportedly signed Matt Flynn to a deal, giving them some much needed veteran depth behind young signal caller Jimmy Garoppolo while Tom Brady is suspended.

New England Patriots Reportedly Sign Flynn

Dianna Marie Russini reported that the Patriots have agreed to a deal with Flynn. She also noted that the team wanted a veteran quarterback in camp, and noted that the deal "has nothing to do with Brady situation." ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the deal was for one year. 

Flynn is a seven-year veteran who has spent time with the Green Bay Packers, Seattle Seahawks, Oakland Raiders and Buffalo Bills. He signed with the Seahawks prior to the 2012 campaign after spending the first four years of his career with the Pack, but he ultimately returned to Green Bay in 2013 after bouncing around.

The former LSU standout's greatest successes undoubtedly came with the Packers as the No. 2 man behind Aaron Rodgers, and most figured he would remain in that spot for a long time to come.

Instead, Green Bay committed to Scott Tolzien and drafted Brett Hundley, which closed the door on Flynn returning, per Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel:

Flynn has failed in two attempts to win starting jobs in Seattle and Oakland, but while he may not be cut out for that role in the NFL, he has shown an ability to make plays as a short-term replacement.

His presence would likely give head coach Bill Belichick some piece of mind since he is currently set to rely upon a young and untested quarterback in Garoppolo, but New England has yet to make any type of commitment to the former Packer.
