Cozart Tears Ligaments, Biceps Tendon In Knee
Thursday, June 11
The Reds confirmed they were placing Cozart on the 15-day DL, recalling Eugenio Suarez to replace him on the roster. Cozart "tore ligaments and the biceps tendon in his right knee. Is expected to have surgery Monday. Rehab approximately 9 months," the Reds announced.
Suarez will get a long look from the Reds with Cozart out of action. The 22-year-old shortstop showed promise with the Tigers last season, hitting .242 with four home runs and 23 RBI in 277 plate appearances.
That might mitigate the loss somewhat, though the veteran shortstop was having a solid season, hitting .259 with nine home runs, 28 RBI and 28 runs scored.
For a Reds team currently fourth in the National League Central, the injury to Cozart is the latest in a string of unfortunate occurrences and could prompt a fire sale of some of the team's more talented but costly veterans.
