Chicago stars Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane were held without a point for the second time in three games in Game 3 despite combining for seven shots, as their team suffered consecutive losses for the first time this postseason.
The Blackhawks also dropped Game 3 at home to the Anaheim Ducks 2-1 in the Western Conference Final, but that came immediately after a 3-2 triple-overtime victory in Game 2 on the road with a 5-4 home win in double overtime following in Game 4.
However, this is not unfamiliar territory for Chicago. In the 2013 Stanley Cup Final, the Blackhawks trailed 2-1 in the series as well after scoring just one goal in Games 2 and 3 before winning three in a row to defeat the Boston Bruins in six games for the Cup.
Tampa Bay improved to 8-3 on the road in the playoffs in Game 3 with goaltender Ben Bishop turning in another strong performance, stopping 36 shots and overcoming whatever injury kept him from finishing Game 2 of the Lightning vs. Blackhawks betting matchup.
Bishop’s status was in question heading into Game 3, but he came through for the Lightning between the pipes. Meanwhile, his counterpart, Corey Crawford, played solid at times for Chicago in Game 3 but also surrendered a game-tying goal to Ondrej Palat just 13 seconds after Brandon Saad scored to give the Blackhawks a temporary 2-1 lead in the third period.
Chicago outshot Tampa Bay 38-32 in that game, including 19-7 in the first period, and missed several scoring opportunities early on against Bishop.
The total has gone under in two of the first three games of the series, according to the Odds Shark NHL database, although the closing number was high at 5.5 for Game 3.
The Blackhawks had seen the over cash in four straight games against the Ducks prior to this series compared to four of six for the Lightning, with the two under results both taking place on the road in a pair of 2-0 shutouts of the New York Rangers in Games 5 and 7 of the Eastern Conference Final.
