Luis Enrique, Barcelona Agree to New Contract: Latest Details and Reaction

Barcelona manager Luis Enrique was rewarded for his fine efforts during the 2014-15 campaign with a one-year contract extension which will keep the treble-winning manager at the Camp Nou until the end of the 2016-17 season.

The club announced the news via Twitter on Tuesday:

Catalan newspaper Sport confirmed that the new deal runs until 2017:

“We are naturally very happy," Enrique said in a statement. "After the wonderful year we’ve had, with difficulties but a very happy ending, we are more than thrilled about the hope of winning more titles. Everything that we have ahead of us is more than exciting.”

The 45-year-old from Gijon guided the Blaugrana to their second treble in club history, beating Juventus 3-1 in Saturday's Champions League final to complete the historic feat. No other club has managed to win the treble twice.

Six months ago, such a feat seemed impossible, as Barcelona were in turmoil and chased rivals Real Madrid in the La Liga standings. Enrique's position was under fire, and he was involved in a spat with star forward Lionel Messi, as reported by Spanish radio programme El Partido de las 12 (via Goal.com).

When the club sacked sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta in January, many wondered whether the end was near for Enrique, and ESPN FC's Dermot Corrigan noted the manager hadn't addressed rumours regarding his future since then:

The club's fortunes quickly changed, however, and Enrique led the Catalans to the Spanish title, beat Athletic Bilbao in the final of the Copa del Rey and completed a hat-trick of silverware in Berlin on Saturday. The numbers at the end of his debut campaign were impressive, as noted by Squawka:

Club president Josep Maria Bartomeu confirmed to Rac 1 (h/t Barcastuff) he wanted to extend Enrique's contract after the Champions League final, but with elections for the position just around the corner, it was unclear whether it would be possible to work out a deal before then:

It now seems Bartomeu found a way to make it work, and fans likely couldn't be happier. While there will always be some who believe Enrique's success is simply a product of the fantastic team he gets to work with, the former Spain international has earned his stripes the hard way.

Enrique guided Celta Vigo to an incredible ninth-place finish in La Liga in 2013-14, his only season in charge of the Galicians, and while his first season with the Blaugrana featured some bumps and bruises, club officials and fans couldn't have asked for a better end product.

Lucho will have the chance to prove he ranks among the world's best managers in 2015-16, and while it's unlikely he will win the club another treble, fans will demand at least some form of silverware next season.
