Wawrinka Springs Upset
Very view people gave Wawrinka a chance of winning on Sunday as he was facing an in-form Djokovic, who was on a 28-match winning streak.
The Serbian had seen off the challenge of nine-time Paris champ Nadal in straight sets in the quarter-finals and beaten Murray in five in the last four.
A poor service game from Wawrinka in the opening set at 3-3 saw Djokovic take a break of serve, which led to him sealing the first set 6-4.
However, the 30-year-old Swiss player came storming back, his one-handed backhand a particular strength as he overpowered Djokovic, per Roland Garros:
Having taken a 2-1 lead with a number of incredible winners, Wawrinka looked to have given away the fourth set as he slumped to 3-0 down early on.
But remarkably, given the immense ability of Djokovic, Wawrinka was able to turn things around. He broke back to level at 3-3 and then saved three break points to stay in the set.
He then edged ahead as he broke for 5-4 and served out for the title, a seemingly inevitable fifth set not necessary in the end thanks to Wawrinka's brilliance.
Djokovic has now lost three times in the French Open final, the only major tournament that still eludes him. However, as noted by Wawrinka after his win, that is surely not set to stay that way forever, per BBC Sport:
While Djokovic was short of his absolute best, he certainly did not play poorly and was beaten by an inspired Wawrinka on the day.
Women's champion Serena Williams provided a pithy summary of an incredible performance:
Meanwhile, Wawrinka's more celebrated compatriot Roger Federer marked the victory:
It was a fully deserved triumph for Wawrinka and another indication that he is capable of mixing it with the very best on his day.
After his Paris performance, he will not be underestimated again and surely has it in him to pick up a third Grand Slam title in the future.
