Memorial Tournament 2015: Final Leaderboard Scores, Prize Money Payouts and More

Matt FitzgeraldJun 7, 2015

Sunday's final round of the 2015 Memorial Tournament began with a past champion in Justin Rose atop the leaderboard but ended with first-time PGA Tour winner David Lingmerth claiming the trophy at Muirfield Village Golf Club in a three-hole playoff.

Matching pars on the first two sudden-death holes at the 18th preceded the players' trip to the par-four 10th, where Lingmerth had a big advantage in hitting the fairway as Rose drove it in the right rough. A solid two-putt par was good enough for Lingmerth to get the job done.

Below is a list of the top finishers on the final leaderboard along with the Memorial payouts from a $6.2 million purse:

Lingemerth was a bit in shock about his maiden victory, per ESPN.com's Jason Sobel:

Although Lingmerth hadn't had a top 10 on tour since last season, the 27-year-old Swede didn't fold under pressure in Dublin, Ohio, firing a three-under 69 to post 15 under par in the clubhouse.

There are few other ways to describe Rose's final two holes to cap off a level-par 72 than pulse-pounding and spellbinding. Typically reserved for a visually stunning blockbuster tentpole, such descriptors aren't hyperbolic in the least.

Rose piped a 373-yard drive downwind on the 71st hole, stuck a 97-yard lob wedge to 10 feet and hit a pure putt to match Lingmerth, who missed his first putt in 16 attempts inside 10 feet on the 18th to pad his lead. The PGA Tour's Twitter feed had the highlight:

After his first shot on No. 18 found the right fairway trap, Rose shanked his 8-iron into the crowd and struck a fan in the head. Thankfully the fan was responsive and received an autographed glove from Rose, but it was still a tricky up-and-down for par.

Somehow, Rose managed to convert:

Fox Sports' Shane Bacon won with his take on the situation:

Golf Channel's Rich Lerner lauded how Rose kept his composure despite striking the fan and needing a spectacular shot when it mattered most:

Then the playoff rolled around, and the two players didn't disappoint. After Lingmerth nearly jarred his chip from right of the 18th green, the duo carded quite impressive fours:

Starting the day three shots behind, Lingmerth started as well as he could've hoped with a birdie at the opening par four and had another at the third after dropping a shot at the second. A bogey at the par-four 10th preceded birdies at both the back-nine par fives on Nos. 11 and 15, along with a two at the par-three 12th.

Will Gray of Golf Channel added more context to Lingmerth's unlikely story as he came down the stretch:

Rose was erratic for much of the round, bogeying four of his first eight holes, though he never quit even when he didn't have his best stuff.

Francesco Molinari played alongside Rose in the final pairing and applied the pressure early, carding four consecutive birdies on Nos. 3 through 5 while Rose went bogey-bogey-birdie in that same stretch. The three-shot lead Rose enjoyed over Molinari and Lingmerth before Sunday's play began was suddenly gone.

The words Rose said after Saturday's round were applicable.

"Every single shot out there, you're on your toes, you're on your guard," said Rose, per the Associated Press (via ESPN.com). "One poor judgment of the wind, or one poor execution of an iron shot, and you can make bogey in a heartbeat."

Both Rose and Molinari made significant blunders at the treacherous par-three 16th, though. Molinari's first found the water, leading to double bogey, and Rose powered his downhill birdie attempt well past and wound up three-putting.

For a brief moment, it appeared the rally Jordan Spieth staged in a final-round 65 to get to 13 under might be good enough to qualify for a playoff based on how shaky the leaders were finishing.

Justin Ray of Golf Channel highlighted a bit of history Spieth made en route to a stellar finish:

Lingmerth struck a pure 8-iron out of the right fairway bunker on the par-four 16th and found the putting surface. Although he hit his birdie putt too firmly, the gutsy youngster drained the comeback putt to walk to the last tee with a one-stroke advantage over Rose.

That set the stage for Rose's extraordinary finish to force extra holes and the drama thereafter, culminating in Lingmerth's breakthrough triumph.

Next up on the PGA Tour is the FedEx St. Jude Classic, just one week out from the U.S. Open. It will be worth watching the action in Memphis, Tennessee, to see which prospective participants in the year's second major tee it up and how they're playing before the trip to Chambers Bay.

Rose won the U.S. Open in 2013, so he has the game to win the stern test of golf. His performance at the Memorial is proof he is in fine form, and Rose can draw confidence on the major stage from his runner-up finish at the Masters Tournament in April as well.
