A major increase from last year's payouts was announced on the eve of this year's tournament. BBC Sport detailed how the total prize money paid out in Paris now tops €28 million.

While the same report noted the French Open is still the "least financially rewarding of the Grand Slams to the players," the way the increases break down is intriguing. In particular, there's been greater benefits on offer to those who endured early exits from the event: "Players beaten in the second and third rounds, and the quarter-finals, will win 20 percent more prize money than in 2014."

That means that aside from the competitive sting, as significant as it might be, it hasn't hurt the likes of Federer to be dispatched in the last eight. The same is true for Maria Sharapova, who exited the women's event after the fourth round.

As for the prestige, beaten finalist Lucie Safarova earned plenty of that during her run. The 28-year-old Czech will be grateful for the €1,350,000 she received for her last-four win and eventual fall to Williams.

This French Open has been kind to breakout star Safarova.

For the world No. 1, a 20th Grand Slam victory was the main prize. Now Williams finds herself just two short of Steffi Graf for Grand Slam wins, per CNN reporter Ravi Ubha.

Turning the page to the men's event, Wawrinka proved his quarter-final heroics against Federer were no fluke. He simply dismantled Djokovic even after conceding the first set to the gifted Serb.

Wawrinka produced some quite phenomenal shots to constantly keep Djokovic rattled and chasing a deficit. One particular highlight was this fantastic backhand, Wawrinka's weapon of choice in Paris, to cap an intense rally, per the Roland Garros Twitter feed:

Wawrinka certainly earned his money on the famous red clay at Roland Garros. He leaves the tournament having dashed Djokovic's hopes of winning multiple Grand Slam titles in the same calendar year.

Wawrinka has also taken only his second Grand Slam win.
