According to the Cardinals' official Twitter, Carpenter left the team's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers after being hit by a pitch in the arm and is listed as day-to-day:
Carpenter has been one of the league's best players this season, hitting .309/.394/.536 and matching his home run total for last season (8) through 50 games. The good news is his injury doesn't sound like it will result in a DL stint or significant missed time.
The Cardinals owned baseball's best record heading into Saturday (37-18) despite losing ace pitcher Adam Wainwright to a season-ending Achilles injury. It speaks to their considerable depth that they can still be a great team without their best hurler.
Losing a player like Carpenter, who is so good out of the No. 2 spot in the lineup, does change the offensive dynamic. Manager Mike Matheny will be breathing a huge sigh of relief that his third baseman is only day-to-day.
