Kentucky Basketball: 3 Questions Fans Want Answered Before 2015-16 Season

Bobby ReaganJun 5, 2015

There isn't a fanbase in the country that demands results—and answers—more than Big Blue Nation. Kentucky basketball has a rabid fanbase that prides itself on the dominant program head coach John Calipari has created in Lexington.

One of the things that comes with a Calipari-coached team, though, is the uncertainty of the offseason. With Kentucky having a plethora of NBA talent on its roster each year, roster turnover is to be expected. However, this is the first time we've seen seven players depart early for the NBA and Kentucky "miss" in the recruiting field.

There are plenty of questions for the Wildcats heading into the 2015-16 season, but these are the questions Big Blue Nation wants answered now.

Will Skal Labissiere Be Eligible?

1 of 3

Skal Labissiere is Kentucky's most important commit for the 2015-16 season. The 6'10", Haitian-born player is considered to be best NBA prospect in the Class of 2015, and with Kentucky thin in the frontcourt this year, Labissiere's play will be vital to the team's success.

However, the biggest question is whether or not Labissiere will even be eligible to play for Kentucky. This stems from the player's relationship with his American guardian, Gerald Hamilton. Back in November of 2014, CBS Sports' Gary Parrish wrote an article detailing Hamilton's potentially exploitational ties with Labissiere, asking AAU coach Keith Easterwood how he could profit off of a prospect.

Labissiere thinks he'll be able to play right away—at least that's what he told The Courier-Journal's Kyle Tucker in April. The situation has been fairly quiet so far, which should be good news for Labissiere and Kentucky. The Wildcats will need him on the court from day one with his talent to help make up for the losses of seven key players.

Can Isaiah Briscoe and Tyler Ulis Play Together?

2 of 3

Kentucky fans have seen this before: two top point guards on the same team, with Calipari and staff convincing one to play off the ball to help his NBA career and for the betterment of the team. It worked once, why wouldn't it work again?

The other time, of course, was during Calipari's first season at UK with John Wall and Eric Bledsoe. This current situation is a little different, however, as Tyler Ulis is a sophomore and a more traditional point guard than incoming freshman Isaiah Briscoe. In fact, during Thursday's press conference, Calipari had the following to say, via Kentucky Sports Radio's Tyler Thompson:

"

I mean, Isaiah is a basketball player. Tyler is a basketball player. It’s what they are. One is more physical, creates great angles, finishes around the goal. The other is just a pit bull, bothersome, play-making, can score it if he needs to. They both lead in different ways. They can both be on the floor together.

"

Now that should answer any questions Big Blue Nation has, but it won't be resolved until they are on the floor together. Both players will likely start in the backcourt, so everyone will know the answer come November.

How Good Is Mychal Mulder?

3 of 3

Mychael Mulder is a new type of player for Kentucky and its fans. He's a junior college transfer, something that isn't common for Calipari to go after. So the question is just who is this Mychael Mulder player?

Well, he's a great shooter that can stretch the floor from the wing position, something that is important to Calipari's offense. His size (6'4") allows him to play both the shooting guard and small forward position and provides a different dynamic than Briscoe or Charles Matthews.

Mulder played his last two seasons at Vincennes University, where he was a first-team JUCO All-American. He shot over 46 percent on his 190 attempts from deep last season and chose Kentucky over Creighton and Wichita State.
