Liverpool Transfer News: Iker Casillas Leads Real Madrid Double-Raid Rumours

Nick AkermanJun 5, 2015

Iker Casillas has reiterated his desire to remain at Real Madrid in recent times, but a report from Spanish website Fichajes.net (h/t George Bellshaw of Metro) indicates Liverpool have made an offer to lure the goalkeeper away from the Bernabeu.

Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is allegedly looking to replace Simon Mignolet despite the Belgian's successful turn of form during the latter half of the 2014-15 season. It's been over two seasons since Casillas consistently showed his quality, but his experience may tempt Rodgers at a time when the Northern Irishman is searching for leaders.

Casillas previously confirmed he wants to remain at Madrid during an interview with El Chiringuito (h/t Jacob Murtagh of the Daily Mirror): "Where am I going to be better off than here?"

On Wednesday, he suggested on Twitter (in Spanish) he is looking forward to working under new Los Blancos boss Rafa Benitez:

"Welcome home! An honour to have you back and eager to start working soon!" reads Casillas' tweet in English, as reported by Joe Short of the Daily Express. The 34-year-old stopper is also linked with a move to Arsenal, per Murtagh.

Fichajes.net (h/t the Daily Telegraph) notes former Reds right-back Alvaro Arbeloa "could complete a transfer back to Liverpool." He left Merseyside for the Spanish capital in 2009, but he has remained a bit-part player since the emergence of Dani Carvajal.

Considering Madrid are due to welcome excellent Porto full-back Danilo during the summer, as confirmed by the club, Arbeloa is likely to become surplus to requirements under Benitez's rule. The 32-year-old has never been the most exciting right-back and isn't a prolific attacker down the flank—a most un-Madrid style.

However, Rodgers may welcome his conservative nature after watching Glen Johnson leave the Liverpool back line exposed with his forays forward in recent times.

Arbeloa is often the forgotten man in winning teams, having won seven major trophies with Madrid and three with Spain, but his willingness to keep things tight may aid Liverpool in a more subtle manner than using a player who bombs from deep. His arrival would indicate Rodgers is planning on using full-backs, having deployed a 3-4-2-1 for much of the recently finished season.

B/R UK's Alex Dimond recently zoned in on a selection of Liverpool players who could be sold during the summer:

Steven Gerrard's departure is symbolic of Liverpool needing to land a handful of confident leaders. The arrival of multiple stars can make up for his absence, something Rodgers has begun to address with confirmation of James Milner's signing from Manchester City, per James Carroll of the Reds' official website.

Casillas and Arbeloa should be viewed in the same vein—potentially bland but highly functional signings. Rodgers tried to add an influx of excitement last year, but he overlooked the more subtle needs of his squad.

The evidence so far suggests both he and the club's transfer committee are willing to take a more pragmatic approach this summer.
