Williams Battling Flu

Thursday, June 4

Williams, who was seen throwing up during her triumph over Bacsinszky, admitted she's been feeling ill throughout the tournament.

“I got the flu after my third round match," Williams said, per Live Tennis. "I’ve been struggling ever since then and I haven’t been getting better."

The world No. 1 has noticeably struggled en route to making the final, dropping the first set in four of her six matches. Bacsinszky took the first set Thursday before Williams righted ship for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 win.

"I don’t think I’ve ever been this sick—I didn’t expect to win that, and I can’t believe I won," Williams told Darren Cahill after the match, per the Guardian's Tim Hill.

Williams moves on to play 13th-seeded Lucie Safarova on Saturday. She's looking for her third career French Open championship and second in three years. Safarova is entering her first major championship final and will need to overcome her career 0-8 record against Williams in singles competition.

Safarova could have an advantage due to her opponent's illness. If Williams isn't able to overcome her flu by Saturday, we may see a major underdog crowned champion.
