NBA Finals 2015 Schedule: Game 1 TV Info and Latest Cavs vs. Warriors Prediction

Steven CookJun 4, 2015

There's finally light at the end of the tunnel, and it's a bright one as Thursday's Game 1 of the 2015 NBA Finals will halt a more than week-long spurt with no basketball in gripping fashion.

With so many off days to dissect the Finals matchup between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors, most of the storylines have been beaten to a pulp—first-year head coaches, a clash of superstars, two starving franchises in desperate pursuit of a championship. Needless to say, both fans and players alike will be relieved to see the ball being tossed up and things finally getting decided on the court.

Series Preview

After booking his spot at the fifth straight NBA Finals table, LeBron James has gotten a hang of the Eastern Conference. But another bitter defeat would be another indication that he hasn't quite gotten the hang of winning the Finals when he does get there.

If the Warriors do as expected and dethrone King James on their way to the title, it will drop him to just 2-4 all-time in the Finals. On the opposite end of that spectrum, a win would push him to 3-3 and perhaps serve as his most impressive feat yet, considering his supporting cast.

One thing is certain—James isn't scoffing at the opportunity, as ESPN's J.A. Adande noted from Wednesday's practice:

Although Kevin Love went down for the postseason and Kyrie Irving has been a shell of his usual self while fighting through various injuries, the Cavaliers haven't skipped a beat. The Cavs have received huge performances from J.R. Smith, Iman Shumpert and Matthew Dellavedova, but James shouldering an extra load was what got them past Chicago and allowed them to breeze through Atlanta.

Of course, stopping James is one of the NBA's greatest mysteries. But in terms of slowing him down, there isn't a team more capable of doing so than these Warriors.

Golden State led the NBA in opponent field-goal percentage allowed throughout the season. The Warriors have been shutting down opponents just as impressively with their defense as with their offense—which, by the way, isn't half bad itself.

Perhaps James can't be stopped, but as San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich has shown, he can be slowed down to the point where his teams have no true chance against a superior offense. Warriors forward Marreese Speights is one who has no doubt about Golden State's chances, per Diamond Leung of Bay Area News Group:

One way that Popovich and the Spurs bested James was by switching a big man onto him during screens—essentially asking him to shoot deep jumpers while all but preventing a drive to the basket. With Golden State's stable of bigs, that was an obvious game plan, and they haven't shied away from revealing that, as CBS Sports' Matt Moore noted:

As for the Cavaliers defense, it struggled during the regular season, but has been leading the league in points against throughout the playoffs. None of those games came against Stephen Curry and Co., however.

Curry has already proved against the best in the West that his team's jumper-heavy formula can work in the postseason. He'll also have sharpshooter Klay Thompson back after he was cleared from a concussion sustained in the conference finals.

With Irving not at his best in these playoffs, James will have to get plenty of help from Dellavedova, Smith and Shumpert just to contain Golden State's three-point barrage.

Alas, James will indeed have to produce one of his best moments yet—and sustain it for the series—if he is to bring the Cavaliers their first championship.

Game 1 Prediction: Warriors, 103-95

In a matchup that presents so many problems for both teams and boasts superstars on both sides who can take over the game, it's hard not to go with the more polished team—and the one playing in front of a raucous crowd.

The Cavs were playing at a very high level in the Eastern Conference Finals, but they also didn't have to chase Curry and Thompson around the perimeter. Just as Irving struggled with Derrick Rose in the second round, he'll prove unable to mark Curry and allow the Warriors star to explode in his Finals debut.

James will get his 30-plus points to keep it close, but head coach David Blatt and the Cavaliers will need to concoct ways to slow down Golden State if they want to stay in the series.
