French Open 2015 Results: Wednesday Winners, Scores, Stats, Singles Draw Update

Steven CookJun 3, 2015

Quarterfinal Wednesday at Roland Garros for the 2015 French Open is in the books, and after all of the hype surrounding one quarterfinal, things unfolded in a rather anticlimactic fashion between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal.

The top-seeded Serb got over the hump by beating Nadal in their fourth meeting at Roland Garros over the last four years. Not only was it a transcendent win for Djokovic, but it also marked Nadal's second defeat in the French Open over the last decade, a span that includes an eye-popping nine titles.

Although Nadal's reign at Roland Garros is over for the time being, that was only one of four quarterfinal matches on Wednesday as things are finally set up for an exciting finish to the tournament. Let's take a look below at all of the results.

No. 1 Novak Djokovic def. No. 6 Rafael Nadal

Djokovic has yet to complete his career Grand Slam at Roland Garros, but the significance of Wednesday cannot be overstated. After falling short to Nadal three straight years at the French Open and twice in the championship match, Djokovic reigned supreme on the fourth try by dispatching the nine-time champion in straight sets.

The Serb's quality emerged from the very onset of the match. He sprinted out to a 4-0 lead in the opening set, only to see Nadal answer back with four games of his own. Djokovic made good on his sixth set point and avoided a tiebreak, but Nadal was in a solid position, beginning to hit his stride and making Djokovic work for every point.

Instead of that continuing into the second set, Djokovic took a firm control over the match. He broke Nadal early in the second and took a commanding third-set lead, helping to end Nadal's tournament and move Djokovic through to the semis.

Nadal just couldn't hit with Djokovic, who had 45 winners to Nadal's 16. With over 30 points more than his opponent, Djokovic couldn't be beaten.

Although it was his first win over Nadal at Roland Garros, Djokovic continued his success over Nadal in Grand Slams to a tune that no other player has come close to matching, per ESPN Stats & Info:

Two matches remain for Djokovic before he can claim his first French Open, but the man who has won nine of the last 10 believes he's in position to do just that. Nadal shared his thoughts on his Wednesday opponent, per the Roland Garros Twitter account:

Any time Nadal loses at the French Open it's more than newsworthy. But it's not a huge surprise that he failed to seriously contend with Djokovic, who has now won 27 matches in a row and continues to emerge as the game's most unstoppable player.

For Djokovic, things promise to get even more difficult as he faces third-seeded Andy Murray for a spot in the final. But considering the huge monkey the Serb got off his back Wednesday, he's a strong bet to keep his run going.

No. 3 Andy Murray def. No. 7 David Ferrer

Murray has been unbeatable on clay so far in 2015, and that continued through a tough quarterfinal with David Ferrer as he dispatched the No. 7 seed in four sets.

The British phenom put himself in a strong position early on by breaking Ferrer on his way to a first-set lead, but the Spaniard battled back to force a first-set tiebreaker. Murray reigned supreme there, before dominating the second set to take a commanding advantage.

Ferrer showed his poise by winning the third set and putting some pressure on Murray. But unlike in years past where Murray might fold in such a situation, he put his struggles behind him, hitting 53 winners and nine aces en route to victory.

He continues to be unstoppable on clay courts this season, although Wednesday marked his first clay-court win over Ferrer, per the Roland Garros Twitter feed:

It's far from surprising to see Murray getting to this point. Having clinched his spot in the semifinal, the Scot has now reached that plateau in 16 Grand Slam events for his career.

Murray has the chips stacked against him if he wants to break through to the final for the first time in his French Open career, facing Djokovic in the semifinals. As for Ferrer, his hopes of reaching a second French Open final in the last three years came to a bitter end Wednesday.

No. 1 Serena Williams def. No. 17 Sara Errani

Those early tournament struggles from Serena Williams seemed like a sign of things to come. Instead, it looks like she got her worst play out of the way early and is now peaking to a third French Open title.

After going down in the opening set in three straight matches, Williams left no window of opportunity for No. 17 Sara Errani on Wednesday. She dominated the first set before taking the second convincingly to book her spot in the semifinals.

The quarterfinal stage has been an elusive one for Williams in recent years at Roland Garros, but she broke through Wednesday, as told by ESPN Stats & Info:

Williams failed to channel her best play throughout stretches of the first week at Roland Garros, but she had no such troubles Wednesday. She hit a whopping 39 winners while keeping Errani to just nine, overcoming a 23-7 disadvantage in unforced errors to win rather easily.

She moves on to face Timea Bacsinszky in the semifinals, but Williams should have no trouble against her if she can continue to play at the level she showed in Wednesday's quarterfinal.
