Jack Wilshere Fined by FA for Misconduct: Latest Details, Comments, Reaction

Timothy RappJun 3, 2015

Jack Wilshere celebrated Arsenal's 4-0 FA Cup win with some foul-mouthed chants directed at the club's bitter rivals, Tottenham. The FA has responded, announcing Wilshere was fined £40,000 for misconduct regarding his Spurs-related chant on June 17.

On June 10, The Guardian reported Wilshere accepted the charge levied against him.

"I am quite proud of always having had that bond with the Arsenal fans since I was young because I came through the club," said Wilshere, per Dave Kidd of the Daily Mirror on June 9. “I grew up at Arsenal, and I love the fans, but believe it or not, I’ve actually got family who are Tottenham fans, so it’s nothing personal against them, it was just a bit of fun.

Wilshere had apologised for his comments on his official Twitter feed, but that wasn't enough for the FA, which promptly charged the Arsenal man.

World Soccer Talk passed along the celebrations in question:

Arsenal clearly didn't feel his actions were all that deplorable, declining to discipline the player, per BBC Sport, though "[he] was reminded of his responsibilities as the club's media channel had to apologise mid-broadcast."

John Cross of the Mirror was certainly opposed to the charges:

Regardless, Wilshere has a history of questionable behaviour off the pitch, and this latest incident will serve as a reminder that he needs to mind his P's and Q's. Still just a young man, Wilshere will have a bright future with Arsenal if he can avoid headlines for the wrong reasons.

Even if, in this case, many feel the FA is making a mountain out of a molehill.
