5 Players Chelsea Should Clear out in 2015 Summer Transfer Window

Garry HayesJun 7, 2015

Chelsea may well be Premier League champions, but to retain their trophy, Jose Mourinho will need to  make a few tweaks to his squad this summer.

We'll see players arriving at Stamford Bridge, but before Mourinho can spend, he'll need to ship players out of the club to ensure the books are balanced.

Chelsea run a tight financial ship these days, so any fringe players who haven't impressed must be feeling the heat and fearing the chop as Mourinho looks to continue rebuilding the squad.

While Chelsea were by far England's best team last term, there is some still some deadwood in the Stamford Bridge dressing room.

That doesn't mean those players do not hold some value, though. After all, one man's junk is another's treasure.

Bleacher Report identifies five players Chelsea should look to clear out this summer.

Victor Moses

Chelsea took a £10 million gamble on Victor Moses in the summer of 2012.

Playing a peripheral role that season, the Blues got some value out of the Nigerian after he scored some vital goals en route to the Europa League final.

But looking at the Chelsea dressing room, where does he fit in now?

Moses has spent the past two seasons on loan at first Liverpool and then Stoke City. His 12 months at Anfield were a massive failure, but he was among Stoke's best players last term.

He has two years left on his contract, meaning Chelsea could still sell him for a good fee.

Moses isn't Chelsea quality, but he's shown he is a more than capable Premier League player.

Josh McEachran

Once the poster boy of the Chelsea academy, where has it all gone wrong for Josh McEachran?

He made his Chelsea debut in the Champions League as a 17-year-old and big things were expected things from him.

Now 22, McEachran's time at Chelsea is surely up. The club has evolved—there are more promising players coming through the ranks, and the senior players ahead of him aren't going anywhere.

McEachran has a year left on his contract, meaning Chelsea can demand a solid fee for him. But even then, will he end up in the Premier League?

Right now, that doesn't look likely.

For his own sake, McEachran needs to move on and rebuild his career while he's still young enough to make a difference.

Ramires

3 of 5

From fringe players to more senior names, Ramires is a player who must surely be sweating over his Chelsea future.

He's a big earner, yet his contribution at Stamford Bridge has reduced significantly in recent seasons.

Injuries haven't helped his cause, but looking at this Chelsea team, it's difficult to see where he fits.

There are players more competent than him throughout midfield, with Ramires being more of a squad player these days.

Every team needs those squad figures, but not for the £70,000 per week Ramires earns.

He has two years remaining on his current contract, and this summer is the last chance Chelsea will have to cash in to secure funds that could be invested elsewhere in the squad.

John Obi Mikel

It seems like we say the same thing about John Obi Mikel every summer, yet every summer he survives the transfer chop at Chelsea.

Surely this season has been his last at Stamford Bridge, though.

Mikel hasn't delivered on the hype that surrounded his signing in 2006. Back then, Jose Mourinho was talking in terms of Chelsea having found gold, but the decade since has shown Mikel to be a poor imitation.

His presence in this Chelsea squad is blocking the path for a youth-team player to be given his chance and used in any rotation to gain experience.

Were Mikel an extremely talented replacement, it would be understandable. But he isn't, and Chelsea would do well to offload him this summer.

Juan Cuadrado

We're hearing Juan Cuadrado could be on his way out of Chelsea this summer after just six months in west London.

The Daily Mail claims that a return to Italy is on the cards, with Inter Milan, Roma and Napoli all reportedly interested.

That will come as a relief to some sections of the Chelsea support, as Cuadrado has been so disappointing.

The theory was that he would need time to settle, but did anyone actually think he would be this bad?

If Chelsea can claw back most of the £26 million they paid Fiorentina for Cuadrado, it will allow Jose Mourinho to reinvest the funds in a winger who can run, cross and shoot.

Right now, Cuadrado doesn't seem capable of doing any of that.
