Giro D'Italia 2015: Stage 21 Results, Final Standings, Highlights, Prize Money

Rory MarsdenMay 31, 2015

Alberto Contador claimed his second Giro d'Italia crown on Sunday in Milan, as he finished safely in the peloton in the final stage of 2015's race.

In a surprising 21st-stage result, Etixx-Quick Step rider Iljo Keisse triumphed after a late breakaway ahead of Luke Durbridge, with the expected bunch-sprint finish never materialising.

Sky Sports Cycling confirmed the result of the stage as well as Tinkoff-Saxo rider Contador's overall victory:

Spaniard Contador topped the general classification standings by just under two minutes to second-placed Italian Fabio Aru of Astana, while Spain's Mikel Landa was third.

He will receive a significant chunk of the overall prize money for the three-week event. 2014's winner, Nairo Quintana, received at least €200,000 of the €1,378,000 prize pot, per CyclingNews.com.

Belgian Keisse outfoxed Orica-GreenEDGE's Durbridge in a two-man sprint finish and eased past the Australian in the final metres to win the 178-kilometre stage.

Here are the results from Stage 21 from Turin to Milan:

Sky Sports Cycling provided the top 10 overall in the general classification:

LottoNLJumbo Cycling provided the profile of the final stage, its flat nature leading most to predict an exciting bunch sprint at the end:

However, Keisse and Durbridge escaped from the peloton with about 30km remaining, with approximately six of the closing seven circuits in Milan to go. The pair were able to make the breakaway stick, and as they headed into the final kilometre, it became clear that it was between Keisse and Durbridge, with the main pack too far back to catch them.

The leading duo had cooperated with each other as they completed the race together, but as the finishing line drew near, Keisse forced Durbridge to take the lead.

As it was, Keisse was then able to pull through and take the lead in the final stretch, with Durbridge left in his wake.

The peloton was in sight behind the leading pair as they crossed the finish line, but it had not done enough to reel them back in.

It confirmed late glory for Etixx-Quick Step in this year's gloriously unpredictable Giro, as the team claimed their first stage victory of 2015's race.

Contador effectively wrapped up the overall triumph in Saturday's 20th stage despite his lead being cut significantly by Aru. The 32-year-old will now attempt to become the first man since 1998 to win the Giro and the Tour de France in the same year.
