USMNT Watch: Guzan Sits Once More, U20s Kick off World Cup Campaign

Joe TanseyMay 31, 2015

Frustration continued to mount among the United States men's national team fanbase this weekend, as Brad Guzan's lengthy stay on the bench at Aston Villa extended into the FA Cup Final.

On the other side of the globe, some of the brightest USMNT prospects began their quest for glory at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand.

Back on home soil, plenty of players in the USMNT talent pool continued on with their respective seasons, while one defender faced a strong test south of the border in Mexico.

Guzan Watches FA Cup Final from Bench

Some people hoped Guzan would finally step in between the pipes again for the Villains on Saturday at Wembley Stadium, but that was not the case, as Shay Given started for Tim Sherwood's side.

Whether or not Guzan would have been able to stop the attacking onslaught from Arsenal is something fans can debate, but most believe he could have kept Villa in the match instead of losing 4-0.

Before the contest, Fox Sports talked with former USMNT and Aston Villa goalkeeper Brad Friedel about Guzan's situation:

U20 Team Beats Myanmar in World Cup Opener

Tab Ramos' U20 squad defeated Myanmar 2-1 in New Zealand on Saturday to open up its World Cup campaign on a high note.

Despite conceding early on a defensive error by goalkeeper Zack Steffen, the Yanks recovered and were able to earn three points to top Group A.

Maki Tall scored at the far post in the 17th minute after Cameron Carter-Vickers flicked a corner kick over to the forward on the right side of the box.

In the 56th minute, Emerson Hyndman finished off the Yanks' best move forward of the match as he slotted the ball into the net on a counter.

Hyndman received high marks for his performance in a match that saw the U20 side struggle to find chemistry for the first part of the 90 minutes.

Heralded prospect Gedion Zelalem entered the match in the second half and turned in a decent shift. He could move into the starting lineup for Tuesday's clash against New Zealand in Auckland.

Zusi, Feilhaber Score in Sporting Kansas City Outburst

Sporting Kansas City kicked off the MLS weekend in style with a 4-0 rout of FC Dallas on Friday night. Benny Feilhaber and Graham Zusi both found the back of the net in the victory.

Chris Wondolowski stayed hot in front of goal, as he netted a strike from the spot for the second straight week in the San Jose Earthquakes' 3-1 loss to Toronto FC. Michael Bradley played all 90 for the victorious Reds.

Harry Shipp provided a goal for the Chicago Fire in their 3-0 home triumph over Montreal. Matt Polster started for the Fire, while Jack McInerney lasted 45 minutes up top for the Impact.

Nick Rimando made six saves but ended up on the losing end of the final result at BC Place on Saturday as Real Salt Lake fell to Vancouver 2-1. Kyle Beckerman started for the Claret and Cobalt, while Luis Gil made a late appearance as a substitute.

Perry Kitchen, Steve Birnbaum and Maurice Edu featured for their respective sides in D.C. United's 2-1 win over Philadelphia.

Michael Parkhurst was controversially sent off for a handball in front of goal in the 16th minute of Columbus' 2-2 draw with Orlando City

Clint Dempsey played a vital role in Seattle's game-winning goal against the New York Red Bulls on Sunday.

In the final match of the MLS weekend, Jermaine Jones exited the pitch with an apparent groin injury. Gyasi Zardes scored one of the LA Galaxy's goals, while Juan Agudelo delivered a beautiful assist on New England's first strike.

Roster for June Friendlies Announced

At halftime of the Seattle-New York Red Bulls match, U.S. Soccer unveiled the 22-man roster for the upcoming matches against the Netherlands and Germany:

It is worth noting that Jones, who is listed as a midfielder once again, may not make the trip following his early departure on Sunday night.

Bornstein Starts First Leg of Liga MX Final

Jonathan Bornstein, who played the role of hero for Queretaro in the Liga MX semifinals last week, earned a start against Santos Laguna on Thursday.

Unfortunately for the American defender, his side fell 5-0 on the road in the first leg at the Estadio Corona.

The two sides will meet in Queretaro for the second leg on Sunday.

Yedlin Plays 90 Minutes in Tottenham Friendly

During Tottenham Hotspur's postseason friendly against Sydney FC, DeAndre Yedlin gave Spurs fans a glimpse of his recovery speed:

The play mirrored his chasing down of Eden Hazard for the USMNT against Belgium at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Yedlin was on the pitch for the entire match in the 1-0 victory by Mauricio Pochettino's men.
