French Open 2015: Twitter Reacts to Friday's Bracket Results, Scores, Winners
Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova, the No. 2 seeds in their respective draws, advanced to the fourth round of the 2015 French Open with straight-sets victories on Friday. They highlighted a day of action that didn't feature any major upsets.
Most of the notable early exits have come on the women's side, with Simona Halep, Caroline Wozniacki and Eugenie Bouchard sent packing over the first handful of days. The top nine players are still chasing the title on the men's side, which should create some terrific matchups during the second week.
Let's check out the winners from Friday's play at the season's second major. The scores are followed by a recap of the action and some reaction from social media.

Friday Twitter Recap

Sharapova wasn't at her best against Sam Stosur as she continues to battle an illness. The tricky conditions created by a windy day at Roland Garros actually helped her cause because her Australian foe, who's usually strong on clay, struggled to find a rhythm.
The reigning champion was able to grind out enough points to advance, thanks in large part to the return of her serve. She generated eight break chances and converted four of them, including the only one for either player in the second set.
Sharapova will face Lucie Safarova in the fourth round. Perhaps more important is trying to work through the sickness. Tennis Connected noted her reaction after Friday's win:
Roland Garros passed along her post-match comments about surviving and advancing:
Ana Ivanovic, who won this title in 2008 but hasn't advanced past the quarterfinals in a major since that triumph, put together her most complete match of the tournament on Friday. She lost just three games as she cruised past Donna Vekic.
Matt Cronin of Tennis Reporters pointed out the draw has opened up for her:
Ekaterina Makarova emerged as Ivanovic's next opponent after easing by fellow Russian Elena Vesnina. Reaching the fourth round matches her best showing in the French Open, an event that doesn't typically mesh well with her power game.
Jose Morgado of the Diario Record explains there will be more on the line than just a spot in the quarterfinals, too:
Carla Suarez Navarro was the only top-10 seed in either draw to lose on Friday. Flavia Pennetta beat her to set up a meeting with Garbine Muguruza in the fourth round.
On the men's side, Federer advanced in straight sets for the third consecutive match to open the tournament. He benefited from a favorable draw that saw Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal land in the opposite half. He is playing like he's prepared to take advantage of that.
TENNIS.com highlighted his consistent success in the event:
One of the two remaining Americans in the men's draw was sent packing on Day 6. Steve Johnson continues to show signs of progress, reaching the third round of both majors so far this season, but he was no match for No. 8 seed Stan Wawrinka.
Nick McCarvel of USA Today notes that leaves Jack Sock to carry the flag:
Tomas Berdych, who's regularly reached the business end of majors in recent years but still gets overlooked, also moved on to Round 4. He dropped a set to Frenchman Benoit Paire but bounced back nicely to avoid a taxing fifth set.
Jake Davies of Last Word on Sport showcased how Berdych doesn't even attract attention when he wins:
Looking ahead to Day 7, it's a star-studded slate. The top seeds, Serena Williams and Djokovic, will both be in action. Williams, in particular, has an intriguing third-round matchup as she takes on Victoria Azarenka.
Other top matchups include Murray battling rising star Nick Kyrgios, Nadal trying to extend his French dominance against Andrey Kuznetsov and Kevin Anderson facing off with Richard Gasquet in a clash of top-20 seeds.
Friday was pretty routine around the grounds of Roland Garros. Saturday should be anything but mundane.
