The 22-year-old is clearly excited about the switch, having previously alluded to the move to north London himself, per Bild (h/t Stephan Uersfeld on ESPN FC):
"It's just great that [Tottenham] qualified for the Europa League. This is a huge challenge. I owe a lot to Cologne. I have taken a great development here. But now it's about time that I make the next step. England is just perfect for it.
"
A previous valuation for the Austria international was quoted at around £5 million, per Metro's Will Giles.
Wimmer joined Cologne in 2012 and was a mainstay for the side as they finished 12th in the Bundesliga in 2014-15, their first season back in the German top flight.
Wimmer made 32 appearances and topped the league's stats in terms of shots blocked, per WhoScored.com:
He will bring added depth and dynamism to Mauricio Pochettino's vulnerable back line, and he should only improve further with greater experience at the top level.
As reported by Sky Sports' Lyall Thomas, current Spurs defenders Younes Kaboul and Vlad Chiriches are set to be offloaded in the summer, with Wimmer likely to be given plenty of opportunities next term.
Spurs once again failed to finish in the Champions League spots in 2014-15—they were six points back from fourth-placed Manchester United.
But Pochettino is clearly looking to build a young side capable of making a run at the top four next term.
